3.0 Shutdown!

Cruising along today w/ the engine good and warm, it just shut off while decelerating down a hill, with a couple of backfires through the exhaust. What was strange, though, was the tach went to zero, (like I turned the ignition off) while in gear. I took the coil lead off of the distributor and had good spark, and it would try to fire but not stay running. After 10 minutes of cooling down, it fired right up and I drove it home 25 miles without incident. It starts and runs beautifully now. The tach going to zero while turning around 2,000 rpm has me puzzled. I wiggle the ignition switch while running and it doesn't die. Could it have been a water bubble in the fuel? (We had quite a few gas stations flooded during IVAN last week.) I'm afraid of being stranded somewhere now. Has this happened to anyone else? Thank you for any suggestions in advance.

I would look at the cd box and all secondary ignition components, check the conections/grounds.

A primary ignition problem could be the culprit as well.

Thank you. CD box and coil are new, so I'll start checking connections and grounds for looseness or corrosion. Thanks again! I don't know what I'd do without this site!:D

Your welcome. What box are you running? Check coil resistance at operating temp if condition persists.

Brian, I had the same thing happen to me last week....after some diagnosis i found it was the CD box, i had a Permatune CD unit that would intermittently fail when it got 'warm'. I swapped the Permatune for a MSD CD unit...no problems so far!

Good luck......

Thank you. Now that you mention it, I do have a Perma-tune. That would explain the tach signal vanishing (from the CD box)! I vaguely remember a thread about the Permatune's reliability, and I thought I was happy with mine. I really need the car to be running reliably during Penn State's Homecoming Parade in a couple of weeks. I'd hate to be the center of attention in front of thousands of people! :o Thanks Again!
