Question Carrera misfire then no start... Suggestions?

OK guys, here it is. Any suggestions?

Under full load, WOT, my 2.7 MFI Carrera has always had a minor, instantaneous, miss – just one beat, but enough for the tacho needle to sweep left and then back again.

Last weekend, took the car out for an evening blast and all was well until it decided to miss one time, big-style – the engine just cut and then picked up again, more than just slight hiccup, more like it was as if the ignition had been shut off and then back on. A few yards up the road, the alarm went off as it had sensed an electrical problem and assumed someone was trying to steal the car... Then, on a number of other occasions on the journey home, the same thing happened although I was driving it in a less spirited manner, waiting for it to quit on me!

Today, went back to car to check anything that might trigger alarm (loose battery terminals are a favourite, especially at night with lights and wipers on. Alarm is a Laserline 996 – about the best there is over here) but all OK. But car will not start. Fuel OK (can smell it) but not a cough or splutter, Zilch.

My suspicions are spark box quit, tacho faulty or ????

Any bright ideas before I have to start spending $$$ (or, in my case, £££)?

The offending beast...

Check the pick up coil inside the ignition distributor and the cable that connect the pick up coil to the Bosch Capacitor.

begin by checking for spark. pull the coil wire from the cap and se if spark will jump 10mm to ground. you don't say what ignition system you have. could be a bad CD unt, or if it has points, they may be burnt or not opening. the jumping tach suggests points, if you have them.

The ignition system is bone-stock CDS. i'll grab a friend later and get them to turn the key while I run the checks. Thanks. I'll let ya know!

Check your points w/ a dwell meter, not just a feeler gauge.
