Weekend carnage - trashed my 993.

Car suffered severe, yet noble, injuries at Summit Point on Sat. I lost control around turn 3, was moving very fast and lost the battle to regain control. I struggled for a good distance and was very close to recovering. But then I got into the gravel pit, grass and.....BAM! I was sliding backwards at a very good clip into the tire wall. Damage looks far worse in person than in these photos. I was able to pry the left muffler back off my tire to get my collapsable spare on and limp home 90 miles. Then I was able to limp to Euro Pros for the estimate. Hope to hear something good later today. Thank God for track insurance!

Yikes! Bad stuff, RL. Euro Pro's will make it all better.

Glad to hear your OK. Let us know how things work out with your insurance (and who you use).

mjshira 10-04-2004 06:27 AM

that sux man. make sure to let a couple different shops look at it. and you might want to source the parts yourself to save some $$$. Good luck!

I feel your pain. Glad you have track insurance! Nice car.

nostatic 10-04-2004 07:44 AM

for some reason it is a bit heartening knowing it happened on the track instead of at the hands of some stoopid SUV. Not much consolation though. Glad *you're* OK, and hope the insurance works out OK.

jpnovak 10-04-2004 07:49 AM

RL, sorry to hear of your misfortune. YOu must have been haulin' to loose it in an uphill #3. guess you are hitting 1-2 right!

Speedy recovery. btw, who is your track insurance through? I am looking for some in TX.

Richard C2S 10-04-2004 07:51 AM

I'm sorry for your loss. Three years ago, a friend lost control of his midnight blue 993 cab at turn 10 at Watkins Glen. Ass end into the armco. Looked even worse than yours. We taped the engine lid closed, pulled some sheet metal away from the rear tires and he drove the 250 miles home. The car was fixed beautifully and looks fabulous. Yours will, too! Keep your spirits up!

Rick Lee 10-04-2004 07:58 AM

Thanks guys. I'm not too upset. It's a car and it can be fixed, obviously with lots of upgrades. Now I have to get RA-1's, a Ruf bumper and if they pull the engine for this repair, then I'll throw in a LWF and RS kit too. I'm just bummed about not having my car for a few months. And yes, I was really moving into turn 3. There were no cars anywhere near me, so I was realyl pushing myself and the car.

Yellowbird RS 10-04-2004 08:01 AM

Ouch!
Glad you're ok and have a track in insurance.

motion 10-04-2004 08:11 AM

Wow Rick!! Now you're a hard core race-crasher! Glad you're ok.

MotoSook 10-04-2004 08:20 AM

Bad, but not too bad RL. Glad you didn't get hurt. I had a couple off track excursions this weekend too, but no panel damage...I did manage to scare Chris Streit a little as he was in my passenger seat...have to get the buffer out and it'll all be OK.

My thoughts as I giggled to the paddock...it's just a car. Good luck witht he repairs.

fryardds 10-04-2004 08:53 AM

Man what a bummer. I have a new, unpainted, rear bumper cover for a ROW 993 if you want to take this opportunity to get rid of the those black bumpers. Let me know and I can send a photo.

Rick Lee 10-04-2004 10:10 AM

Oooh. Brian, that sounds interesting. Please do attach a photo. I definitely need a new bumper. Should hear from the shop by end of day.

Jim Richards 10-04-2004 10:13 AM

Just got back from lunch with RL. His biggest concern about this incident is that he'll be Porsche-less for a next couple of months. You gotta love this guy's dedication!

ajackson 10-04-2004 10:40 AM

So who do you use for track insurance?

Rick Lee 10-04-2004 10:44 AM

Ok, everyone on Rennlist want to know too. Get track insurance from this guy: David Empringham, Laurel DE Management Inc. 866-518-1110. Insuring my 993 for $45k with a $6k deductible gets me 10 track days for $922. That pretty much doubles the cost of each DE for me - a small price to pay when you go off track.

Britain Smith 10-04-2004 11:00 AM

I have a set of all the rear lenses that you will need...on the other hand, I gotta look into that track insurance.
