Punched the Cat?

Jack (fellow Pelicanite) and I have always suspected that my catalytic converter has been punched out. Mainly, because his car (87 Coupe) is so much quieter than mine (88 Cab) at idle.

I decided to change out my 02 Sensor (since it’s never been changed) and I thought I would be able to see if the CAT was punched out. Well, I can stick this copper wire all the way down the CAT. So does that confirm it? Shouldn’t I be running into the inerd’s of the CAT with the wire if it is NOT punched out. Now I’m wonder how the P-Car will run with a new 02 and a punched out CAT (if it is)?

Yes you should run into something with the copper wire.
The CAT has a fine grill-like look.
Will run fine with a new 02 since it reads the info prior to entering the CAT.

Does it sound hollow if you tap on it? I converted mine some years ago before the SSI conversion. Without the ceramic grid in place it sounds much "Emptier" if you rap it. There is no way you could get that wire in there either as the holes in the ceramic are too small to allow a bent up wire to pass through.

How much of a performance gain will you see with a cleaned out cat? Is this an accepted mod or a no no??

Someone proved that you get a performance drop if you gut the cat. I ran a gutted cat for a while. It's just louder. You need some back pressure.

You gain a bit of power if you install a euro pre muffler. I have one now.

A search will touch on all of this. There is also a chart comparing the euro pre+ 1 in two out and the ssi systems with 2 in 2 out.

As a COBOL programmer, I'm sure you're accustomed to antique technology; meanwhile the rest of us are running disc brakes on our 911s

"As a COBOL programmer" and
"meanwhile the rest of us are running disc brakes on our 911s"

Actually, Systems Programmer on CICS and MQ. Good catch.....slip of the tongue (and hand on the DISC brake - OUCH).

I use to live in Orangevale. Sure miss that part of CA.
