Where are all the marchel cores out there???

I have been looking for an extra marchel alternaotr for some time. called allot of people just looking for a back up as mine is in for a rebuild and he is backed up. I would like to drive my car and don't want to be with out an alternator. Is there someone out there collecting them or ar they just flat out throwing them away. Maybe this is what I should have done to bigin with and just bought a new style IR model. Any thoughts???

I could only find re-built units if I gave them a core.

When I was researching, I always heard that the external VR Marchel is one of the best alternators Porsche used. I had mine rebuilt for that reason and bought a new VR just in case. Maybe everyone is just hanging on to them.

Could be I would just like to hang onto 2 of them one extra

I tried to have mine rebuilt, but was told that it was beyond repair. Are some of the major components either NLA or too expensive to warrant a rebuild?

I'm still a bit confused as to what I bought in exchange: a rebuilt Bosch unit with Marchal-sized terminals(?)

No all the parts are availble but you have to use a motorola stator I believe I am sure warren will know but anyhow You have to look for a good shop. The guy I have can do it . it just is not going to happen as fast as I want it and I want to avoid it in the future. He has done several in the past for me with good success

I've got a core Marchal - what am I offered for it?

mb911 10-06-2004 07:14 AM

What do want for it. Offers by me are way to often insulting

Rondinone 10-06-2004 10:42 AM

I've got one that I won't be using. The rear bearing fell out and the rotor rubbed the stator for a few blocks, so it may not be rebuildable. I'll take $40, I'll pay UPS shipping. PM if you want it.

Once the rotor "drags" on the stator, the stator windings usually become shorted
to the stator. The plastic cap in the rear is only a bearing support and CAN'T
tolerate fans which are forced on the alt. shaft driving the rotor to the rear breaking
the plastic cap. Once this happens, the rotor will "drop" and drag on the stator.

Many have stated correctly that the 70 amp Marchal is the most reliable Porsche
alternator, i.e. internally mounted alternator as apposed to the 996 alt which is
mounted externally.

Let me think about that one not sure if I can use anything off of it

Ha! You got it...

The sad thing is that the PO had it recently rebuilt, and I just took it apart to paint the fan. Stupid $300 mistake.

mb911 10-07-2004 04:50 AM

Oops! Don't want to make the same mistake then I won't have any marchels

mb911 10-08-2004 08:55 AM

I Thought this was the only one avaible for a couple years. That would make for a bunch of them out there??

mb911 10-11-2004 06:04 PM

Dave DTW I may be interested in your core as my rebuild is taking to long. does it function at all. would it work for the next month and does it come with the nut?

mb911 10-12-2004 06:46 AM

Really want one help??
