Newbie (pics), what is this part?

In the process of replacing the driver's side door stay I found this small piece inside the door that I cannot figure out where it is from. Can anybody offer a suggestion? On the right side the part looks like it could be press into a mating piece and experiences some some kind of torque in operation. Everything related to the door seems to work fine. Oh yes, this thread is worthless with out pictures (scanned images with partial finger over the lens) of the car this came from. I have owned for a little more than a year. 1985 TIA Gavin

That is a broken window regulator pivot. If your window is working, it has already been replaced so don't worry about it. Welcome to the board, you will find a great many people here that are willing to help you.

That is part of the window regulator mechanism. Its part of an "axle" or "pivot" that joins the movable glass frame to the mounted door frame. Do you have manual windows?

Thanks for the all for the quick responses. I have a feeling the part has not been replaced. The car has power windows and the glass still goes up and down but if the window is not all the way up or down the glass feels and sounds loose (slight rattle) in the door when the door is closed.

I dont' think so. A rattle would be something different because that piece is just a pivot. I replaced mine this past year, if yours was bad, the window wouldn't go up at all, or if it did, it would be very dificult to get up. A power window regulator shouldn't work at all with a broken pivot. A tension spring is basically clipped in between the slot that you have pictured, and that is the tension that lets the glass move up and down. It's like a helper for lack of better terminology. Those things are prone to failure and it isn't uncommon at all.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I just discovered the exact same piece loose in my door (and was directed to this thread). My car is an '88 (and I'm quite sure it hasn't been replaced), but everything seems to still work perfectly (with no rattles whatsoever) even with this piece broken off. Any ideas?
