fuel cell to pump pre filter
Hi,
I have a generic fuel cell in my '83 SC in the same location as the stock fuel tank used to be. I ran it without a pre filter to the pump and killed the fuel pump at a track day. I replaced the pump and put a filter between the fuel cell and pump. The filter has 1/2 inch (-8) inlet and outlet with a 40 micron filter screen. The line from the cell to the pump inlet is about 18" long. This set up killed the pump in about an hour on the track. I checked the filter screen and it was clean. What do the rest of you guys with fuel cells run for a pre filter? Thanks, Pat |

Had that pump been run without a filter, at all? I had a pump fail after I had added the filter, but since it had only about 3" of hose, I strongly believe that the piece of debris was in the motor part of the pump, which the fuel passes through before the (very sensitive) pump mechanism. The late model factory screens are large and quite fine, however.

it seems like rotary pumps are intake sensitive. I guess it cavitates easily. AN8 & 40 micron sounds like the best shot for an intake filter though. Maybe you didn't bleed the pump when you did the install? I use a Racor w/ 2 micron before carbs.
