That wonderful Carerra heater "squeal"

I've been putting up with this "seasonal problem" for a while now. On cool early spring and fall mornings I turn the heater dial to 4 and flip on the seat heater. Then I have the pleasure of listening to the blower(s) scream for a few minutes until it gets-it-out-of-it's-system and settles down. Then I drive away in peace and comfort

This love-hate relationship with my heater has worked OK for years, but now it's starting to squeal intermittently (usually when I'm trying *ahem* not to impress some babe in a G30) whenever the heat is on - not just at initial start-up. In other words, it's getting irritating and potentially hampering my socialization skills.

I know that the footwell blowers contribute hot air, but the majority of the squealing noise seems to be coming from the center area of the dash.

Is it the blower in the trunk compartment that is the culprit here?

Why can I not seem to locate that item in the Pelican catalogue? (they list the footwell and engine compartment blowers only)

PB,

Here is a diagram and some numbers on the central blower. I don't see that it is sold as a unit, but instead in parts.

Tom

P.S.: I THINK that I have one which was removed working from an '87 Coupe, but I'll have to check my stock as I can't always remember which items I've sold.

Excellent info Tom - let me know if you do have an "11" or related assembly for sale.

Thanks

Ken

I have the same noise, but on mine it only happens when I slide the top right control (fresh air) blower control, OR, select defrost inbetween the seats.

Sometimes it doesn't do it straight away and then usually just as I sit back to enjoy the overtaking oportunities, SSSSSSSSSSSSCCRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAACCCCCHHHHH!!!!! !!!!

And I nearly **** myself!!!!

Very annoying.

Ken,

I'll check tonight or tomorrow morning. I like to hook 12 VDC up to these things, and see if they "hum" or "squeal". I also like to do that with small furry animals and ... Wait a minute, wrong forum for that!

I'll let you know if I still have it and if it operates smoothly.

Tom

10 to 1 the rest of your fans will be going before too long. I had my '88 for about 4 years and had the engine mounted, AC evaporator, fresh air and both footwell blowers all go bad.

Ken,

This is what I have:

No ability to test it as I don't know what the pin-outs are, and I am heading out to Buttonwillow for a track weekend as soon as I send this message. But the fan unit spins smoothly when spun by hand.

PM me if you are interested. I am thinking like $30 plus shipping, which would probably be ~$8 or less via parcel post.

Tom

P.S.: From the '87 Carrera Coupe.

Is this noise being caused by the central blower or the engine compartment blower? Everyone here seems to be discussing the fresh air blower only.

You wouldn't be able to hear the engine blower inside the car. Most likely the fresh air blower is making the noise.

TMH look at the first picture that you posted, you can see the wires to the brushes in the picture. The four pins is for controlling the fan speed from the dash.

Actually, I'm becoming convinced that it's the footwell blowers that are the source of my problem. I'm going to investigate further...
