Porsche Crest Parking brake on the '69 911

My first project on the car and I'm already hit a hurdle!

I need to adjust the parking brakes and have been following all the steps outlined in three different manuals/guides - including "101 Projects for you 911" - turn the star wheel, and cable, etc. . Before I was able to even get one side adjusted I started to hear a strange scraping sounds coming from inside the drum (behind the disc roter) when turning the rotor. It almost sounds like one of the spings came loose or broke free and is making that scraping sound.

So I want to take the roter off to habe a closer look. In order to remove the rotor I need to remore the caliper. The caliper is fasted with two 19 mm screews that are easy to remove. Problem is the brake line from the cotrol arm to the caliper is metal and I'm afraid this line will bend or brake of I remove the caliper to pull the rotor.

I really don't want to get involved with brake hydrolics etc. at this point.

Any advice on how I could remove the caliper without damaging the metal brake lines?

Many thanks,
Swen

Swen,

As long as the brake line isn't too old, (metal seems to get brittle with age), you should be able to gently pull the caliper back out of the way and hang it in place with a piece of wire.

It has worked for me.

Thanks Les - is it OK to slightly bend the line or is there presure in the line? If not, would I be able to pivot the section of line between the caliper and connector/fastener to the control arm at that connector point (the connector that brings together the solid metal line with the flexible mesh line)? It is old, the line from the arm to caliper is original from '69 and my dad never replaced it. Beyond the control arm, the flexi line is replaced with stainless mesh.

Many thanks

If you are trying to bend a 38 year old steel line , I would NOT recommend that. Best to soak the fittings with penetrating oil and WAIT
soak again, WAIT...etc. Perhaps over a couple of days. Then try and break the joint. Good luck.
