I thought about making one about 2 years ago. Not because I wanted one, but because that is an easy part to pull a mold off to start with. Just thought it would be good practice. Haven't made a mold in about 10 years and that seemed like an easy piece to start with again.

I like it. It is just cosmetic -- the wt. savings is nil. From the point of view of an "honest aesthetic" I think it would be fine if you already had light wt. bumpers and deck lid, etc. That way it is a styling cue to the real wt. saving parts on your car.

No way would I pay $170 for it tho -- but I'd pay $35....

Thats the trouble with higher quality composite parts...its hard to even cover tooling and material costs..let alone labor..

Remember, carbon fiber is extremely conductive. However, one could laminate the final ply in fiberglass, which will add some insulation factor..

How about a matching master cylinder reservoir cap?

How about some actual structural parts where the specific strength and stiffness of carbon fiber composite is put to effective use? Said electrical chassis cover is just one step above a carbon fiber "look" stick on laminate. Jim

structural parts have to be designed by engineers, not imagineers.... that's a barrier to entry

Here is a quote from their website "No extra Horsepower just the Cool Factor". Hey, at least they're honest about it! I gotta confess I'm a totally unapologetic sucker for stuff like this. If it weren't $169, I'd have one in my car.

I have a test Mercedes AMG SL65 in the driveway--604 hp, $185,000, etc.--and most of the engine cover is real, not fake, carbon fiber. Everybody loves it. Totally useless. But so are diamonds. So is gold, in fact, unless you're plating NASA-quality contacters.

The word "bling"--okay, it's not actually a word, it's a grunt--is getting overused. Bling is way visible--22-inch wheels on a 'Sclade highlighting brake rotors the size of dessert plates, which so visibly demonstrates that some people have no clue why oversize wheels originaly found their way onto performance cars. But a $200 piece of carbon fiber you hide in your engine compartment is way cool. I gettin' one.

As the originator of this thread.......I admit I am getting one Yep, true. But mine costs a lot less because it is from a custom one-off source.

I am a little concerned about the electrical conductivity.....

Autobahn Extremist is my local p-garage. They had a special template made and everything to get it perfectly correct. The owner has a killer 930. He made custom piping and carbon fiber engine components. He said the quality available was crap and decided to start his own set-up. I guess it's for those who have everything.

Who makes GOOD Carbon Fiber bumpers?

Who actually makes good Carbon Fiber bumpers and hoods that are actually stronger and lighter than fiberglass ones? Thanks, MGH
