188 DIN HP or around 180 SAE net. If it was converted to USA emissions, it would be about the same as any 78-79 US car.

Be really, REALLY wary and careful about gray-market cars ... ask for copies of all of the certification paperwork, an then do a careful search for info about the company that did the conversion work ... looking for any siezures or indictments regarding the company! Many non-scrupulous companies did gray-market importation and conversion work, and much paperwork was bogus, and the Feds are not particularly helpful to consumers in this area!!! They don't mind taking your car away ... months later when they finally get around to checking and not all of the t's were crossed right or i's dotted properly ... it can take years and cubic $$$'s to straighten out the mess, as a few Pelicans have documented!
IMHO. it isn't worth the risk!

The 81 models were upgraded to 204 HP, DIN, around 195 - 200 HP SAE net, basically with the retarded cam timing from the Carrera 3.0 adn early US SC's and with a new set of higher compression pistons.
As I've said before, in the early 80's I used to work in a lab that emission tested & certified grey market conversions and almost all of them were junk. The profit margins were low, the competition fierce and the quality was poor on most of the cars I saw. I know that some Pelicanites have had great success with their grey market cars, so YRMV. Jerry

I agree that it is probably best to stay away from them. There are a handfull things that can be problems from being federalized. Thankfully I didn't know that when I bought mine! I did get pretty lucky, and got one that hadn't been abused too bad by the chop shops that federalized them. If you can find a good euro SC, it can be a very quick car. Most have no sunroof, and have little to no options on them making them very light. On top of that, the 81-83 have a higher compression ratio (9.8:1 as noted above) giving them a bump in HP (204hp), a better oil cooler than the US spec cars, smaller bumperettes in the back, and a few other details. If you don't know what your looking for though, it could be a piece of rusty junk!

Well, here is my dos centavos:
911SC are fairly easy to convert to US spec - there is a LOT less to do to these cars as comapred to the other grey cars of the importation period of the 1980s. I have a grey 79SC and the work performed is minimal - catalyst replaces the premuffler side markers replace the rubber strips (crappy US) headlights bolt right in evap canister is easy to plumb in speedo not much else ----------------------- The fed process is not a problem.........BUT do watch for rust! A problem even on the galvanized cars such as my grey 79SC. Most every fastener is rusty on mine.

I have an '80 SC. It has a sunroof and power windows. I was told that it was probably a Euro model because it's seats have leather backside and trim but a cloth material seat and back area. I was told that US model were only available with full leather seats. Any thoughts on this?

ishmeal, don't waste your time with a euro in the used market. There are plenty of excellent US-spec cars to be had at similar prices. The benefits of a proper US-spec car far outweigh those of a euro IMHO.
RRReed, check your driver's side door jamb or registration papers, if your VIN number starts with WPOZZZ then your car is a euro or rest-of-world spec.
