50 Greatest Sportscars of All Time

Thought you guys might like to see this. The 911 is #2, right behind the Mclaren F1 (1992).

The rally cars look very good as do all Ferraris. I thought they would have a Lotus. The early Elan was always an excellent car with amazing handling and weber carbs. Also how did the Bently get in there and no M-3s?

Cut from a review:

Such immense, but perfectly controlled power can catapult the Continental T from standstill to 60 mph (90 kph) in 5.7 seconds. Top speed is an effortless 170mph (273 km/h). Even at three-figure speeds, the deep throb of the engine is barely audible above the soft swish of the wind and automatic changes of gear are almost impossible to detect. And the brakes? A Continental T can be brought smoothly from 100mph to a standstill in less than five seconds. The most powerful production Bentley ever made both challenges and rewards its driver. As a road-tester from Car magazine put it: "Huge performance, tireless brakes, formidable roadholding, staggering handling, rumbustious sound-effects and drop-jaw presence."

WHat is "formidable roadholding"? Sounds like he is describing a tank. I know the big BMWs are just as good and they weren't listed either. What about Mercedes?

Bentley Continental, amazing car, awesome Grand Touring car, but NOT a sports car.

So the 928 isn't a sports car by that logic? I'd argue if that's true, then the 996 and 997 aren't sports cars either.

Yep, the 928 is also a GT, not a sports car. It may be darn sporty, but it's definitely not a sports car. A Cayenne is not a sports car either.

Quite like the 'media' bias in reporting all things positive with respect ro cantidate kerry, and negative with repect to the President or administration during the past 18 months ... those 'greatest list' articles always reflect the biases and experiences of the writer, rather than defined, objective criteria ...

My own feeling is that the AMG Hammer probably outperformed the Bentley in all categories ... but it still wasn't a sportscar!
The spectrum of cars covered in that article is completely ridiculous! From prototype endurance race cars to touring sedans ... with a few street sporscars thrown in, but including a plethora of '80s Group B rallye/race cars and '50/'60s road/track race cars, there can't possibly be a written specification or criteria for making that list!

Where's the Mangusta, 550 Spyder, 904, 906, & 917???

Or, how about the Toyota 2000GT, or Mercedes C111???

This is definitely subjective to personal opinion, but nice to see Porsche is well representative. Ferrari is also well represented, Porsche is in good company.

They're sibling rivals in an indirect way.

I think it was only open to road cars. That being said the MACCA is my favorite and has been for a long time, well since it came out. If anyone else out there is in love with it you should really read Driving Ambtion co authored by gordon murray the man himself. Long live pcars and the allmighty mclaren

I can see the Conti T being excluded - the current GT is more likely, imo. When compiling such lists there's always controversy because the GT is often blurred with the luxury coupe; there isn't a lot of surface difference between say, a Mercedes-Benz S600 coupe, BMW 850i, and a 928.

But the 928 is more of a sports car since it places performance ahead of luxury. This design choice is the only thing that keeps modern 911s from falling into the GT category as they've gotten bigger, heavier, and piled on the features. With the advent of the 993, the idea of a GT had become redundant - there's much more contrast between my '83 928 and 911.

Emanuel
