What are these?
Can someone identify these two holes and do you think it's a problem that they are blocked. Since we are at it what is the pick up you see on the left with the yellow and red wire, and should there be some sort of protective cover over the pick up?
Thanks, Gerko 1978sc ![]() |

hmm, I'll take a stab at this, but I don't know how accurate it'll be. My guess is that the large hole is for heat from the engine fan (even though that's what it looks like the hose on the right is for). The small hole, don't know. The pickup looks like oil temp or pressure. But I'm having a helluva time deciding where this is. Kind of looks like we are looking at the engine sheetmetal on the driver's side. THe black/orange thing in the top left of the pic looks like the distr cap.
I was woke up because I'm on call 4 hours ago, and for some reason I haven't been able to get back to sleep, so you are stuck with me right or wrong. ![]()

Hi steve,
Indeed it's the engine sheetmetal on the driversside left of the fan. Don't know about the holes (maybe something for the air pump) but thought the oil temp/press is on the right , so this is why I am wondering what is the pick up on the left? Gerko 1978sc |

I think you are right about at least the small hole, bet that's for the air pump. Maybe the other hole is some sort of hold over from earlier models before they made new sheet metal without the hole.

Thanks steve, from the pelican datbase: Thermotime switch: it tells the coldstart injector to run until the engine is warm.

It looks like you are asking about the area that, at one time, contained an air pump .
That protruding bolt held a bracket that the factory mounted the air pump to which, as the name implies, pumped air into the exhaust to lower emissions. The small hole leads to a series of 6 tubes under the engine that feed into the exhaust. If you don't have to ever pass emissions you can just remove that bolt by threading two nuts onto it , snugging them up to one another and then turning them counter clock wise. If you do this correctly it will back that bolt out and you can replace it with a normal sized bolt with the same thread pattern if you like things to look neat. If you have to pass an emissions test with a visual inspection one day you'll have to go shopping for an exciting new/used air pump and all the parts that go with it. If you look on this site in the parts area you can see an exploded view of the air pump for yourself. In California we have to pass smog every two years so we have to have all those nice parts in working order . |
