Question Steering Rack loose?

Subject Car: 1971 911T

My steering rack has a bit of play.

Can this be adjusted or tightened and how do we go about doing this?

I know there is 2 13mm bolts in the middle of the the rack, it seems to be springloaded. Do we remove the bolts? How do we adjust or tighten from there?

Thank You for your reponses

The steering rack is a complex assembly of feeler gauge thickness shims (whatever that means), a roller and needle bearing and a nylon foot that drags on the rack for tension. If you look in Bentley or Haynes, they say don't mess with it. Buy another.

In fact, used ones aren't that much money.

The factory manual gives some specs for setting up a steering rack. You have to have the thing out on a bench and you need some special tools to do a complete service.

If the play is at center, it is probably time to get another rack becasue if you adjust to no play at the loose point, it will be tight off center.
