late '83 sc w/ carrera engine case
I'm looking at a late production 1983 SC for possible purchase. The engine numbers are correct, and the engine case appears to be a Carrera case. I've been told that at the end of the SC 3.0 run that they started to use the Carrera 3.2 engine case once they ran out of the SC cases. Is there any official info as to when (by date or engine number) they went to this change? Also, is there any information as to if or when they went to the Carrera style head studs? The car I'm considering has 140K and the original head studs in good shape. Any info would be very helpful.

Check the engine case number.....it's near the serial number...usually stamped a little lighter. They are near the oil sender down by the crank on the right/passenger side.
|
The change to the later cases wasn't synchronized w/ the model year changeover. It happened when they ran out of older castings in late '83

Jay, you didn't believe me? I looked at this car today for Jay. The engine number is 64D4853. Which means this engine was #4,853 out of a total of 5,747 US 911SCs built for the 1983 model year. So yes it appears that this car was at the end of the model run, which is further confirmed with a build date of June 1983. The last SC off the line was in July 1983.
The question is, when did Porsche start using the coated dilvar headstuds that were used on the Carreras. |
Dilivar studs were first used on the SC....they...from what I hear got a little better towards the end of the run. Less breakage were reported on the 82-83 models than the earlier ones....
IF they used early Carrera cases on the late run SCs in 83, it would be best identified by case number.....mine was a late model...but a euro model and it had a 930 case consistent with the SC stats.... |
Yes, The Cases were changed to a newer/Carrera style that had no oil sump plate, a good way to spot it on the late SC's.
I'm not sure when the head studs changed, But they are still of a type of Divilar in the Carrera's that have been known to fail. If there good now at 140K that's a pretty good history that their sound. Just keep them dry :D |
I have a very late 83, no problems at 90K.
|
I'll say that's late :)
I did a little research and the case change was about April of 83. |
Thanks all for the input. This makes my decision a bit easier.
