Mulholland Run - "Redux" - Run to Willow on the 24th or 23rd?
 

As next weekend is the Alfa event at Willow, which a large number of pelicans will be at competing, here's a suggestion:

Meet up in Santa Anita around 8ish, eat breakfast, then take Lakes Hughes road out to Rosamond. If you haven't taken this road, it's a fun desert Canyon road that opens up on to the plains. It's short, but sweet.

Once we get to the track, we can act as a cheering squad for all the 911s running in Time Trial, as well as the road-race.

I'll work on pom-poms and t-shirts.

Whos all doing the event?

I'm going to be there for sure taking pictures and possibly taking the Into Course.

Maybe if its permitted you can time it so you guys can particapate in the lunch time Parade Laps. Does Alfa have a Big Willow lunch parade lap session?
Be sure to visit our pits and we'll be all too happy to plug in the latest in car 911 race tape into the VCR/TV.
Might be the last race tape where a 350hp celica (cock) blocked our two 911s for 7 laps, the Celica would get loose in the corners, we'd pass only to have him take it back on the striaght. Classic battle fast car meduim speed in corners vs fast car in corners medium speed on striaghts.

Not sure which way you go but, if you what to put a little more heat into those tires and make your run not so short and sweet.... make a LEFT at the at the Lake Hughes/ Elizabeth Lake/Pine Canyon Rd. 'T' ... and take Pine Canyon all the way to 138/Three Points, then turn LEFT on 138 and make up the 15 miles east to 90th St. W turn LEFT and go the 7 miles north to Rosamond Rd. and RIGHT to the track... 138 and 90th St. will get ya wellllll into 5th gear... ;)

Lunch parade lap sound cool. I didn't get to do it in Fontana. never driven in a track. Is that possible? I might be in. Which day?

I mmmay go on Saturday, if there's a good group going. I should really be on my bike training, but I might just blow that off for Sunday.

Saturday night I'me hosting a friend's surprise Birthday party (hope he's not secretly a Pelican, but I'm sure he would have told me), so I doubt I'll be coherent on Sunday morning.

For what I see in the future, driving on the track at lunch time is going to be severely regulated, if permitted at all due to recent tragedies. If that is the deal maker/breaker for your trip out there, better contact AlfaClub and find out what their plans are.

I think we've all seen the best of that deal. Now, if you want some track time, you probably better join a club, get an instuctor in your car and do it right. I will be doing just that.

Speaking of which, I would be there (at Willow), but the car project is moving rather slowly. I'm going to miss out on the rest of the damn year, it looks like. But, I swear I'll be out on New Year's Day starting out at TRE if I have to push the thing!

Fill out a registration form, get your DOT legal car teched, wear cotton cloths from wrist to ankle and a min. Snell 90 Helmet.
$20 = Classroom from 10 - 11, Track (rotating) Lead and Follow 12 -12:45. I think the Alfa club is providing a much better new driver experiance than any open parade laps can provide. It will be safer on track since all cars will have been "street" tech'd, driver's rx classrom training about the track, the line and driving in traffic. Lastly a controlled track experiance with lead and follow and no danger of some total rookie dive bombing you anywhere.
Good on the Alfa club, I hope to see more clubs do the same. A bargain for only $20.

Now, I'm really bummed I won't be there. Oh well, I've got about 400 laps, maybe 500, in a kart at Willow, so I guess I'm not missing the world. Sure glad it's not Fontana, I love that place. I've got about 10 laps there, the most recent being on the oval in an Indy car as a tandom passenger.

Thanks for the kind words. I have learned from our past President, Paul Blankenship, that as a club we are a stew flavored by a wide variety of spices. About 15% of our membership does not own and may never own an Alfa and that's because of years spent cultivating a safe, professional and relatively inexpensive environment for competition driving and the cars and people that come with the sport. Membership gets you an event discount.
For those that just want to feel a track under their wheels we run an Intro Course at all of our competition events (except if have an enduro scheduled). This includes an hour of classroom instruction on driving fundementals and track etiquette then approx. an hour of following instructors as they (at safe speed) show the correct driving line, breaking points, turn in points, exits, etc., slowly increasing speed each lap.
For some people this leads to the next step which would be a weekend at one of our semi annual Performance Driving Schools. This involves rotating from classroom to skid pad (dry then wet) to track while learning the limits of your car in a safe environment and improving your basic driving skills. Our instructors will passenger with you to critique or drive to demonstrate. EVERYONE will have an instructor in their car at some point during the weekend. Our most recent guest instructors have included John Morton, Roberto Guerrero and Tony Adamowitz - not often you can share your car with legendary pro drivers that have competed and won at Le Mans, Daytona, Sebring, etc., etc. The School also has separate training sessions for Time Trialers and wheel to wheel Racers.
If the (addictive) brain drugs have kicked in by this time you'll be putting a 5 point harness in your car and hone your skills by competing in Time Trials. We run 5 to 6 Time Trial / Race Weekends a year. We historically run Willow Springs, Buttonwillow, Laguna Seca and try to throw in an occasional Las Vegas Iternational Raceway or California Speedway. Until you've qualified for a competition license you drive with a big X on your car so we can forgive your mistakes instead of using obscene jestures.

This sounds great. I might be up for the track driving portion, but not sure yet.

Having had a life-long family friend (I consider him an uncle) who raced, collected and restored ALfas (included in his collection at ALL at one time - a TZ1, TZ2, and a Guilietta Sprint) they've always had a close "second best" place in my heart. What is the helmet situation for this event?

I'd like to drive the course, since it sounds like speeds will be low and safe.

Who's up for a caravan Saturday morning??

Helmets are manditory for anyone going on the track. Helmets must have a SNELL rating of 90 or better.

If you're nice, you'll probably be able to borrow one from one of us.

I did 2 all-day track events a few years back in BC (Full speed, 4*20min. sessions), and after seeing what it did to my brakes and tires, i vowed NEVER to hit a race course again until I had the right car/equipment to do justice.

...but I'll have my balaclava along just in case :D

Will they be offering the Intro Course this weekend? If so, what is the charge and the car requirements?

Well, I guess I can edit and answer my quesitons. According to the link above, they are having the Intro Course this weekend. The cost is $20.
