timing advance check procedure
I have a '79 SC 3.0 that I recently rebuilt. I sometimes hear a faint rattling from the rear if I step on it from 4k on up. I have not checked my advance timing. I searched the archives and know how to mark my pulley. I have about 400 miles on the breakin thus far (no leaks and it seems to run great).
My STUPID question is: Do I just free rev the engine to 6000 rpm to do the check? I dont know why but it scares the hell out of me to free rev the engine at this rpm for more than a split second. Will I hurt anything? How long can one safely free rev the engine? A couple of seconds for a quick look at the pulley with the timing light? I apologize for my ignorance. |
Tim,
No, reving to 6000 for 4-5 sec won't hurt your engine ... If you use a digital multimeter or engine analyzer with inductive pickup it might be better than relying on looking through the back window at the tach on the dash! BUt, I've done many times -- both ways, without damage!!! |
Thanks Warren!
