Hey, guys, I need an opinion. I've got a '71 T Targa, S spec's, sport seats, new clutch, new syncro's in 4th and 5th, new targa top, new floors, new front pan, body not yet redone but all the same color, 14" Fuch's. A friend has offered me his '80 SC sunroof coupe that needs paint at a good price. The dilemma: The '71 will have to go if I buy the SC.
I love the early carburetored cars but also know the later 3.0 SC was a better car. Whcih one would be a better long range investment? All opinions are welcome and appreciated Thanks, Jerry aka leepa@rcn ![]() |

Jerry,
I think that you mentioned one reason to keep the 71 T......the simplicity of the car. I've got a few friends that have made the swicth to the more complicated new versions and regretted it on occasion when something went south....... They're newer ,yes , but more expensive to repair. I'd keep the old girl. Martin Sellers Fallbrook, Ca. 70 T |

Just about any car isn't a very good investment. If you're looking to avoid depreciation as much as possible then either car, kept relatively stock and in excellent condition, will probably fare well.
If you're looking to make long range profit I'd probably go with a more "desirable" / lower production 911.

Install a 3.0 (or 3.2 or 3.6) into the 911T!
I'd echo the cars are not investments statement...but with these cars you usually don't loose money over time (unless you restore or modify the car...then you can get "upside down" easily). Example: A $10K 911SC in in 1998 is still probably worth the same amount today in 2004. A new car bought in 1998 would be worth 1/3 or 1/4 of the original price because of depreciation.

Well Jerry, its entirely up to you and a tough choice. Before I got my 72, the wife told me to "just buy a 993" and be done with it.
![]() After I calmed down and consulted the board (got lots of great input) I decided that the older cars have ALWAYS gotten my attention and kept it. The SCs are great and I would love to add one. Actually, I would love to have 1 of each iteration of the 911, but I digress. Now, if you prefer Coupes over Targas then the decision just got easier. I don't like sunroofs so that would be deal breaker for me. What's your feeling about Targas and sunroofs? How important is that to you?

Sorta what DD said. If it was a coupe for a coupe, I would take the older car. Investment wise and every other wise.

Jerry,
Since I'm screwing around, taking a mental health day another point came to mind. The newer fuel injected models just don't have that "BBBRRRAAAAAATTTT" sound when you mash the peddle. I always miss that when I get into a newer model. Just my humble opinion........ Martin Sellers Fallbrook, Ca |

Very, very good point Martin. And to be perfectly honest, I just don't get that stirring in my loins looking at CIS like I do when looking at my six velocity stacks.
Thanks guys, I think 'the old girl' stays. |
