73VGE - Kermit - Coming Home!!

After the long anxious wait this summer, I am leaving Sunday to pick up Kermit from Mike McGrath in Westport, CT.

Taking the long ride home through the Smokeys. I am not planning on any difficulties, but a bit of emergency planning never hurts. I have a few spares with me, but wanted to know if there are some Porsche Shops or "helpers" along the road that might be able to assist if we run into trouble.

Here is the trip route. We are taking all 2 lane highways on the run. From CT - NJ, and then through Allentown, PA. to Harrisburg, and on Highway 11 through Hagerstown.

Past Staunton, VA, then Highway 221 through Roanoke City, and Highway 58 south, back to Highway 11 in Tennessee, then the Gatlinberg, Waynesville, Knoxville area to take a slow drive through Tail of the Dragon.

Then coming back to Chi Town on Hwy 62, then Hwy 27 to Lexington, then Louisville, and I65 back up through Indiana to home.

Just putting together a brief list of "who to call if the worst happens." Thanks to all the guys that helped me over the past year on this voyage. I will post plenty of pix when I get back.

larry

I bought it to use the motor in my '72. (That has now since been sold.) We parted the rest out enough to pay for the transplant. Sad about the car, but it was a terrific learning experience to be able to completely tear down a car and not have to worry about screwing it up for the re-assembly!

The poor PO paid almost $12k for a rebuild, only to hit an uninsured motorist who ran a red light just a few days after rebuild.

Here are some pics of the tear down carnage...

looks like you guys had fun with it!... is the bent front bumper for sale by any chance?

sorry to hijack the original thread -- larry, i hope you have a great ride. you probably won't need any spares, but best to be prepared. I drove from Oregon to Florida when I first picked up my '71E, and had a trunkfull of tools and spares, but did not need any of them.

Nope, nothing's left, really. Sorry!

Also sorry for hijacking this thread Larry! If for some reason you're diverted through the Cinci area, drop us a line and I'm sure we can at least give you a spot to rest. But I understand if you have absolutely no desire to go through Cincinnasti. ...BELIEVE me.

Good luck on your trip. It sound wonderful. And what a great time of the year to be going through!

Larry,

I bought my car from Doug (Doug&Julie). Kristen and I flew down, picked it up and drove it back (car's doing great!). It was quite an experience. Doug made things a lot easier on me by being super nice to both of us... Kristen was really impressed with the entire experience.

The ride back was a riot... getting passed by old lady's in toyota's cause i was nervous about the car (I drive the snot out of it now)... freaking out about the oil because i didn't pay attention to what doug told me... good times

Larry, I'm on the wrong coast to be much help. But, as I said over on ESR, best of luck on your trip. Glad you decided NOT to transport the car, but enjoy a drive instead. All will be well. I have a good feeling about it. (Not that that is going to make any difference. )

Kristen thought you looked really sad as we drove off with your car.

I dont think you would recognize it from a driving standpoint Yoko es100's, bilstein sports, engine sound pad, new trany fluid, euro cat (big difference), wong chip, Recaro Speed seats, front wheel bearings, valve job, 930s wheel, rebuilt all calipers, stainless brake lines.

Lots of preventive maintenance/baseline stuff... the only 'breakage' was the right front wheel bearings. Winter to-do list is turbo tie rods, backdate heat, cut out the air box.

Longer term... the thing needs to lose some weight, new rims, redo suspension. The oil consumption has been a little higher than I expected (119k), but not alarmingly so (no smoke)... at some point the engine will come apart (3.4?!?!?!)... but I'll need a new house with a bigger garage for that.

I was very sad. Well it's good to see she's gone to a good home! I do miss her. Don't get me wrong, I love my Boxster. But since the '72 is at project status (not running...and will likely go up for sale before too long), I miss having a 911 to drive. There's truly nothing like 'em.

By the way Larry, you might want to check out a couple of suggestions here...

Cheers.

Doug--Bernie said he had a hard time figuring out who you were at the airport

Larry--you're going to have a heck of a trip. So far, the best I can do is keep shaking SUV's off my tail on the Eisenhower. Not much fun. I was supposed to take a trip to Ft. Wayne, IN this Thurs., but it was cancelled (the Porsche is sad).

Bernie, I'm sure you found out that it's more important to worry about the lug nuts than the oil level

good luck Larry...we're all counting on you... I can't wait to see the frog.
