heavily modify my targa?
I am thinking of keeping my 87 and modifying the looks. Its quite original with 51k on the clock now, and a good canidate to drive for a long time. Does it sound dumb to add a duck tail, maybe Carrera scripts, Ruf bumpers, Fiskies, recaro seats, rs door panels, maybe turbo flares, etc .....??
Its just a little plain right now..... and thinking of options.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1098199883.jpg |
I have track driven Formula 2000 cars, but never the Porsche. Maybe would consider... but that is a very big can of worms.
|
This thread was double posted so ken was replying to this reply I made to the other thread:
Have you done any DEs or do you plan to? |
I say have fun with it. The RS door panels have made added to not only the look but have given me the room I need inside. Here is a look at what has been done to mine!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1098200555.jpg

Looks good... What bumpers do you have??
|
Stock stinks! Make it "your car" and do with it what makes you like it better. The only person that you have to please with any changes is yourself. Have fun with it and keep all the original parts and if you hate it, you can go back. That is the good thing about these cars, they can be modified quite easily.
That being said, when my Guards Red car was still a targa (ahh, memories), I had a duck tail. In my opinion, it didn't look right on that body style. Go with a Carerra tail or if you flare the fenders, a Turbo tail. I like the Ruff bumpers idea too. |
It looks great just like it is!!

Here's my car and Paul Sopp's to give you some ideashttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1098204322.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1098204340.jpg

what kind of seats are those Jon? Looks great
|
Recaro SRD's--super comfy seat and great for DE's. Two bad points--the plastic on back of seat for strap openings hurt my girlfriends head when she rides with me, and they are a bit(* to keep clean. The fabric is black and shows every little piece of lint. Other than that they save 30lbs over stock and allow for recline. Super seat. Fits big people too.

More interior shots!
|
Maybe I will lower it, add a duck tail, hand paint the center crests, and change the seats to recaros.
At least this way its all bolt on changes with minor cosmetic improvements. |
Wow, I haven't posted my car for a long time. . . and here it is. I also added MA Shaw YB style f/r f/g bumpers. Here are a couple picks of the front and interior.

Paul,
What kind of seats are they? And are they leather? How in the world did you drop that much weight and have the car still look complete??? |
like this?
Go for the Duckhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1098210067.jpg

The seats are Monaco RS in leatherette. They weight about 1/2 the weight of the stock seat. Replacing the F/R bumpers and hood with FG alone dropped over 60 lbs. Get rid of the AC system, spare, ww reserve, rear seats, Everything that wasn't necessary to hold the car together was removed as long as it didn't have a negative impact on the visual. Things that were added were only added if the replacement weighed less. . . except for the roll bar.

Better question...... Why should I keep the 87 and not buy the 993 I am looking at?
|
Paul,
Hate to bug you again but, I found the cobra monaco but, not the RS and not in leatherette. Is that the same,I.E fixed back, seat? How did you mount it? Any fit issues? Sounds like a nice seat from the description if it's the same as I found. Thanks, Edit: Ken, that sounds like it should be a new thread but, I think someone has asked that recently...? |
993 is nice but you need to get into a 993RS to match the fun quotient of the older cars or at the very least do lots of very expensive mods to a stock version.

THe Monaco seat I have is made by Monaco. I picked it up from GRP, GRM, or something like that in California. They advertise(d) in Excellence magazine. I used the stock Porsche seat mounts to place them low on the ground. THe Monaco seat rails raised the seats to high for my taste. The seats are available in cloth, leatherette, leather and in a variety of colors. I chose them since they offer more comfort than a race seat yet more support than the factory sport seats, at a lighter weight, and they do not have a fixed back.

Modify it. It's yours enjoy it. If you had an original SC/RS, an original '73 RS lightweight with a racing history, or a Ferrari 250 GTO, then I'd say anything other than a good cleaning deserves the harshest punishment, but it's just an '87 targa. Yes, a great car, but not really a collector's item, so you might as well enjoy it to the fullest extent.
If you had a wife that looked like <insert favorite supermodel/actress name here> would you lock her in a room and abstain from sex for fear of wearing her out?? |
