Should I go MSD?
Thinking of installing an MSD ignition (6A or 6AL) into my stock 69 911T.
Will I notice a difference? I know there are lots of threads out there, and have read them but for anyone who knows the 69T specifically, I would like to know in regards to my car, whether it would be beneficial. Jim |
911T? With the Zeniths's . This will be a marriage. The MSD's work very well with carbs.

Thank you. That's what I thought. I was just thrown off by a post in another thread in which a user stated "MSD ignitions don't work well with early 911s".

Actual experience here.
Motor: 2.7L , 40IDA 3C's webber carbs, Euro Pistons, Solex Cams. MSD, SSI heat exchangers. Pertronix unit in distributor. Uses centrifical advance only. Combination has very good street manners on 91 octane gas. Could probably run 89 when it gets pretty cold. Check into wheather you will need a tachometer adapter. I think '69 maybe different wiring different than '70. Good luck, David Duffield |
I'm told the 69 has no existing CD box to replace. Not sure on the tach adaptor. Even MSD says their experience varies, even on the same make/model/year... Could be variances in tach construction they say...

What is your reason for wanting to go with MSD? Are you trying to fix a non-existant problem?
|
When I went to the MSD and the Pertronix ignitor as a trigger it made keeping the carbs in tune TONS easier. At first it felt like I had sync'd and adjusted the carbs every time I fired it up. Now I am used to that and would slit my wrists if I went back.

A non-existent problem wouldn't be a problem at all now would it? Hmmmm.... No, the Webers are a ***** to fine tune, and normally she's running rich, even when you think she's in tune. Always get a single pop on the downshift once she gets to the lower RPM range. Too much unburned fuel getting through the system. I'm sure if I put a torch up to the exhaust, I could make a flamethrower. Jim |
BTW: My 66 did require the tach adapter. I have the old ugly one. Looks like somthing out of a 30's russian airplain.
As far as the poping on decel, part of that depends on how well your exhaust breaths. I have been able to tune most of those out using Bruce Andersons 1800 RPM idle mixture adjustment trick. |
1800 RPM idle mixture adjustment trick?
|
In one of his tech articals in Excllence he said to prop somthing on the pedal or move the linkage (once it is sync'd) and hold it at 1800 RPMS then do your idle mixure adjustment, finding that sweet smooth spot. Worked really well for me. Basicly it is adjusting the idle circut just before it goes into the transition to main circut. This is where adjustment is more critical since most of the time you are at part throttle when driving.

MSD made a big difference for me. Much better driveability in the lower RPM range. I too was a constant Weber fiddler. I ended up using a tach from a 72. Couldn't get any of the tach adapters to work. YMMV.

I use a Crane XR700 in my 69. It has been the single best modification I have made...
|
Crane/MSD either one will work well. there are those that insist on the Bosch CD units but I am going to stick with my MSD. I had bad luck with the Purma Tune. ( made no difference)
|
Had an opportunity to pick up an XR700 for $11 a while back. Found out though that the optical eye probably wouldn't fit in my Marelli distributor and I didn't want to try to find a Bosch.
Jim |
If I had an original Bosch CDI in my car I probably would have kept it. (for Loren :)) But since it's just a plain ol' inductive ignition with mechanical points and coil, the MSD and Pertronix was a natural choice.
I have had prior experiences with MSD iginition products in drag racing applications with good success.... |
There's an Accel Laser II on eBay currently. How does this compare?
Jim |
Jim, if you do a search under my name, you'll find that I had a later 2.7 distributor modified (small machining work) to replace my Marelli. Your Marelli WILL fail at some stage and you cannot buy new caps and plugs. I rebuilt the Bosch deleting the vacuum retarder and it looks just like the original. The Crane with the optical pick-up ensures there is virtually no wear in the new unit, and the spark became stronger than it had ever been. This is a fun and relatively inexpensive project.

You know if you two guys did a mind meld, you'd be FishCopper and live in the Bahamas... but still drive a '69 T.
