84 Carrera Big Red Upgrade - Master Cylinder Question?

I beleive I currently have a 19mm MC in my 84 Carrera. Should I upgrade this and if so to what? I was told that my MC would work fine with my Big Red setup. Is this the case?

Since am doing this I might as well upgrade if it would be of benefit. Anything else?

Thanks,

-Jeff

YOu will need a 23mm MC. The 19 will work but you will have a soft pedal and be much less than optimal.

As w/ many beliefs...., no you have a 20.6mm m/c

Again, wrong! You will need a 23.8mm minimum, 25mm is desirable.

The easiest is to use a 23.8mm 930 m/c, any from '78-'89 will do fine

Lots of brake info here

Jeff,

If you decide to upgrade to a Turbo/ 930 MC, I have a new one that I had on my car for 1 week. It was to big for the calipers I have on my car so I took it off.

$100 + shipping

Thanks

Ah well I won't say who told me this...I figured I needed the turbo one and wanted to get it when I got the Big Reds but was told no. I see the 23.8 m/c offered here on Pelican but where can I get the 25mm. Since I am sparing no expense in this upgrade might as well go to the 25? What type is it and is it a direct bolt on? Oh yeah where to get it?

Thanks for the brake info

-Jeff

Is a 23.8 turbo MC a bolt on to an older pedal cluster, ie. without vacuum boost?

Not going to be done easily, you would need to t/p the setup from a 993tt, C4S or 993RS. This is a non trivial task.

The boosted 23.8mm m/c from '78-89 930 will work fine. It bolts right on to your brake booster, for a full Big Red setup f/r using the 322mm rotors all around you also want to remove the p/v

No, for that application(pre'77) you want the Ate 23.8mm non boosted cyl. AKA Mercedes Benz truck

Any tricks/part # for removing the proportioning valve? You end up with two male connectors facing each other about 1" part. (snide comments will be ignored!).

Thanks,

Chris

Easiest is to replace the whole line from the 1 joint out(or in). You can piece together a small union but its a lot of leg work finding the parts.

Does my 1977 911s have this p/v too? What would happen if the p/v is left in place with the "big reds"?

Mine connected together. My porportioning valve had a conector on one side - I pulled that off and connected the two male ends together.

And thanks for your advice on the brakes Bill - They are awesome - I'll just have to hold my breath on how the Wilwoods hold up.

OK so removing the p/v is on the checklist. I have searched for different options and it seems pretty straight forwared to get the lines connected up in place of the p/v

I also ordered the turbo m/c from our host

I am assuming it is the 23.8 but it does not say and the guy on the other end of the phone did not know either - which is scary as this is where I got the advice to stay with my stock m/c on this setup

The line item is this "911 Turbo Master Cylinder (1978-89)"

Could you confirm this bill?

Thanks again,

-Jeff

If you, or anyone else wants to rebuild a 930 MC, I have a NOS 930 MC that you can have.

Bill, I love your site! WOW! I lost the link to one of your posts where you showed the range of good to best on brake set ups. Do you have that link by any chance?

Also, with the Cayenne out for some time now, calipers are popping up on eBay. Do you have an opinion/knowledge of how/if they would work on a Carrera suspension?

Pic of V6 Cayenne calipers on ebay.
