yet another pertronix question
I'm sure everybody is sick of this question..
I did run a search and all of the threads were tailored to wiring... my problem is the actual physical mounting. does the pertronix kit for the 911 fit all years of distributor? My distributor is the yellow labeled 0231 159002 from a 67S I removed the points and the instructions say to mount the pertronix base into the same screw that had held the point... maybe I have the wrong base, but it doesn't line up at all.. help? brant |
I'm holding the box #1867. I see on pelican that they sell these for 72 on....
but they don't list one for a 67 distributor... the sales person (non pelican) told me this was the right one for my 2.0 motor... but now I thin not. any of you early guys know if they make one for the early distributors... anybody have any advice for a novice? tia brant |
I have a 68 & had the same problem. My distributor uses the 2 piece points & nothing would line up. What I did was remove the base plate where the points mount, there are a couple of ridges that prevent the Pertronix modular from mounting flush. I took the plate to work & had the guys in the machine shop mill the ridges off & then I could line the modular up to set the air gap. I then had to drill & tap holes for mounting the modular. A lot of messing around but it worked.
I think if I had it all to do over again I would have spent the exta for an MSD unit. Still might get one. |
Even if it was 1/2 the price....the reliability of the MSD and other units far outway the Petronix problems....

I have used the Pertronix modular in my high perforamce VW's for years & never had any problems. But I have also heard of people how have had problems.

that is exactly my problem, I have the 2 points model of distributor...
MikeZ, does the MSD make a points replacement pickup? (race class does not allow crankfire) another thought... does a resistor such as I use in my street car crane optical pickup, kill the strength of the spark ? (probably should start a whole nother thread for that one) so either I buy something else that fits this ealry distributor, or heavily modify mine... thanks all brant |
The Crane Allison Optical unit with the Fireball ignition is my favorite. Summit Racing has the best pricing.
