Rekeyed Door Locks, Anything I should do while panel is off?
 

I took the door panels off and had the locks rekeyed to fit the ignition key. Anything else I should do while I have the door panels off? Is there anything I can do to to make the electric windows glide better? Anything I can do to the window motor?

lube all the friction points

Install RS panels.....

Clean all of the dirt out of the window slides. Then spray them with silicone spray lube.

Check the inside of the door for rust. Use Por-15 or some sort of rust converter on it.

I need to do this myself.

Clear out the door-bottom drain holes as well. Make sure everything's tight as it should be. Make sure you reseal the door plastic skin well. MAKE SURE YOU NOTE THE WINDOW SWITCH WIRING BEFORE YOU PULL!!!!! I lost a couple of fuses because Porsche decided to use two blue/black wires on the switch. Thanks, Ferdy.

I've got silicone spray so I'll spray after I'm done cleaning.

Holes are clean and no rust. Always a good thing to see.

I don't have the vapor barrier. Any suggestions on what to use?

I carefully marked the window controls. REad to many stories of people asking for help re-ataching.

I just pulled my panels last weekend. I lubed the regulators w/ white lithium grease, cleaned the contacts on the switches, and right now I'm waiting on the rubber window channel that I'm going to glue the window into and the vertical felt and weather stripping. I have a cab that the windows were getting hung up on the downstroke and were coming out of the channel. Hopefully this solves everything ( I'm sure it will).

any clear plastic sheeting should work. Even a painter's plastic drop cloth. 3M makes a great spray adhesive to bond it on.

One other thing: soundproofing has improved in the past 30 years... think about putting some pieces of Dynamat on the outer and inner door panels. Overall road and vibration noise levels in the car will drop, and you'll hear that sweet flat six sound more clearly.

Since you're in Denver....where did you get the locks repinned to fit the ignition key?

I'd like to do the same thing.

Dires Lock and Key. They are located downtown and were recommended by Storz. He only charged me $5 per lock. He definitely knows what he's doing. Mechanism works smoothly.

Check for rust - with a small powerful flash light.

As to soundproofing -- conside rhow much wt. you are willing to add to a sports car. You can use various sound absorbing materials and not all add much wt. Search on my name + key words for some info on this. I like the Quiet Kote(?) or Coat stuff. It seems more advanced than Dynamat.

Run better wires now if you want them or will want them later.

Check the back of the hinge and door stop apparatus to be sure it is all in good shape (no tears or cracks starting in the sheet metal....).

If you have the door handles out of the door you are only 5 min from rekeying them yourself. Just insert the key it needs to match but, wont turn the cylinder then remove the cylinder and key as an asembly and knock down the pins to fit flush on the cylinder. They're very soft material and you can do it with a worn out file..

and hand slam the inner panel to check for rattles.

a dose of Por-15 inside the door at the lower seam isn't a bad idea.
