28-tube cooler owners: question, and pics needed.
Okay, now that I have a 28-row cooler I need only figure out how to mount in the right fenderwell.
However, I do not understand how it is meant to attach to the headlight bucket: to the side? The very back? Above or below the centerline of the bucket? The mount tab on the cooler seems to indicate it should mount on the side of the bucket, but...? Any and all pics of how you have mounted yours very much appreciated. Second question: Does anyone run a protection plate between cooler and front tire? That is, a louvered bit of sheet metal to prevent rocks, etc. from damaging the unit? Many thanks in advance, John

Did you get the mounting brackets too? The brackets mount to the car and light bucket, then the cooler to them. Install the short hoses and the coller, then the bracket locations will be obvious. Sorry, bo pictures here...maybe when I get home.
Also, I don't run a protector plate...I don't think you need it. |

Hi John,
The Factory isntalled my 28-tube Cooler when I picked up the car in Stuttgart (I knew from 1974 911 experience that I needed someething better than a trombone), but they did not install anything behind it. Having had it for lo these many years, even off-road when the track kinked and I didn't, there is no damage, and there are no dents, in the tubes. They are pretty robust.

Andras and others:
No brackets at hand - I am running blind on this. Can I get you to snap some pics of the brackets and mounting, or describe in detail how this attaches to the headlight/body tub? I can fab. up anything: that is a breeze. The question is, how does it go in so I don't screw something up structurally and at least get close to an OEM job. I REALLY appreciate your help on this. A few digital pics would solve my problems. Again, many thanks in advance, John

John,
I mounted mine using brackets purchased from my local hardware. I used one large "L" bracket 6" by 6" and a 3 smaller "L" brackets roughly 2" by 2". The large bracket ran along the side and just above the front chassis rail (the length of the oil cooler will determine the right position, but just confirm from inside the luggage compartment before drilling). I then used one of the smaller brackets to locate the top of the cooler onto the headlight bucket (drilling the hole in from inside the bucket), including the appropriate OE rubber bush. The remaining brackets I first secured to the large "L" bracket and then to the oil cooler, once again using the OE rubber bushes. Just make sure you treat the driller holes with some anti rust treatment. The result is strong, light and very simple. I took about 1-1.5 hours to fit. Here are some shots (not real clear though). ![]() ![]() ![]()

John or Souk,
What is one of these tube type coolers worth? Just going through my spares in the garage and found one of these I had saved. Thx, JoeA

Jdub,
This is the factory install of the upper mounting bracket on my SC (the one on the headlight bucket in question). I received an extra upper bracket with the installation kit I purchased from Elephant Racing (again, because mine already had one from the factory). You pay for postage and it is yours - the reason... I admired the testing you were previously doing in regards to improving the temperature reductions with the trombone coolers against all the 'naysayers'. ![]()

Joe, I think a good used one is worth $250 with brackets...w/o brackets, $200.

Daryl:
I'll take it: sent you a PM with zip. Many thanks! And thanks to all for the pics and information. I will be sure to add mine to this thread as I proceed. I will go by JohnW's and have a look at the '80. What I'll try to do is make up a diagram/dimensions of the factory bracket so we have that kicking around. I would imagine the procedure is to first weld the upper bracket, then mount the cooler with rubber, then let that hang down with the lower bracket already attached to the cooler bottom. Then go ahead and mark the holes for drilling into the tub? Your comments very welcome! John John

Souk,

83SC ROW CAB
Here's a picture from my restoration. The bottom bracket just bolts onto the wheel housing. There are 2 rubber bumpers between the bottom of the cooler and the bracket with studs (8mm) sticking out of both ends. The top has a simular rubber bumper. The back of my headlight bucket has a bracket that sticks back. (The top is open so it almost looks like a hook.) Makes it easier to install. So the cooler hangs from the top and rests on the bottom bracket. The bumpers are sold at PP. Careful they're easy to tear when you tighten. I'm sure you can make the bracket. Hope the picture helps! ![]()

Joe, a little new paint makes anything look good.
Growing up in the home building business my dad taught me a good lesson. The guy's always wanted new equiptment. What we had worked fine and that stuff lasts forever as long as you can source parts and be handy with welders. Paint went a long way twards making the operators feel like they had new stuff. Guess who got to slop it on? There's some guy's out there who restore farm equiptment as a hobby. The most impressive thing is a gallon of red paint!

Sammy, I'll sell you mine for $20, but you have to throw in the BAE stuff
![]() Seriously, I think 200 is fair for just the cooler. I've seen them go for a lot less and a lot more...but we're not all lucky and crazy. For another 150, a savvy shopper could go to the next level of cooling, the Carrera radiator, but I find that the 28 row works just fine! And if you need more cooling, just feed it some air...like removing the turn signal for hot track days. I've always operated by the "what goes around, comes around" mantra, so no use screwing anyone over. It's a SMALL world out there ![]() |
