Unhappy Unsual twang sound in center tunnel

I experienced this twice now. Mine is a 72t with 915. Upon decelerating from the freeway, I heard a noticeable twang sound, like a spring that pops loose from the center tunnel. The car is still shifting fine. I still have the original 72 housing not a 73+. Any idea?

Thanks,

John

Are you located near Nashville? You may have a Country/Western singer trapped in there....

Ok - enough of that... I don't think there are any real springs in your center tunnel -- but there are some metal cables under tension -- just like big guitar strings. I'd bet that somehow one of them is being "plucked" -- it must be caught on something and then quickly relased - creating the twanging sound as it vibrates.

I recently found (on my 71) that the three plastic bushings that the throttle rod slides through in the tunnel had fallen apart. It left the throttle rod flopping around and getting in contact with other things. Made strange noises. The bad part was having to pull the shifter, e-brake and rear tunnel cover to get to them. I found the front section of the throttle rod was bent also. It was coming in contact with the clutch cable. There is also the hand throttle link to that rod that may be popping on or off of the rod.
Just a thought.

I've been hearing a similar sound in my '86 occasionally. It usually happens when I push the clutch pedal to the floor, so I was thinking maybe there's some debris stuck in my helper spring.
