Flare width????
 

Yes, I did a search and after reading threads for 2 hours I still don't have the answer I'm looking for in full.

How much wider does the steel RS flare add to your early car? You can give me measurements from the wheel well or overall width of car I guess. I know that its going from a 7" flare to a 8" flare, but ST's were called 9" and are usually listed as same part number.

I've heard a measurement of 11.75" for the SC flare, but don't know the exact landmarks for this. I bought the horse before the cart and am trying to make sure an SC flare will cover my rims that are sitting in the garage...Ebay is bad about this.

I have a outside spacing from mounting surface of 116mm with a 265 tire mouted across the 10" rim to minimize sidewall. With excessive camber, I can almost get the tread inside the standard lip now (not driveable) so I think an SC will cover. It looks according to Bill's data, diagram and recent postings, that it will just fit. I've got the bolts just covered and no problems with the oil lines at all on the 72.

I've never heard of an 8-inch flare.

I used to run 10-inch wheels under SC (9-inch) flares.

There's nomenclature or what it is called and then there are actual measurements

The rear flares used on RS, Carrera and SC models from '73 to '89 are called 9" flares but measure in stock form ~11.5" from the inner wall to the inner side of a shaved lip, aftermarket welded on versions can be ooched out a bit more than the stockers, intact lips subtract from this #, there are slight chassis variations, whether from manufactring, age or accident I don't know.

Now a perfectly placed tire w/ dimensions of ~11" x 25.7" can fit in the wheel well iff the lips are ooched out and the oil lines are moved and the trailing arm bolts are shaved.

The purpose of the wheel is to place the tire perfectly. On my car a 9.5" bead width wheel w/ a +19mm o/s does that job. I have feed back that a 10" wheel w/ +18.6mm o/s used w/ a 5/16" spacer will also work.

Thanks for the answers from the hardcore guys. The answer on the 8" flare nomenclature was just from an aftermarket flare and it was listed elsewhere as a 9". This just made me question the overall size.

Tire should be around 10.5"s OEM Porsche quirky thinner than wholesale tire. It is listed at 25.3 so its just about the same size as I have now though probably raising the car slightly due to stiffer side wall than my little 225 *15's.

10" rim 0ET is 127mm BS +18.6mm o/s -7.9mm (5/16"spacers) = roughly 138 back. This by my calculations gives me 116 outward from mounting flange. This is what I tried to accomplish with a total of 11mm o/s on a 10" rim. I guess I'll order the flares and update on outcome.

While you have it apart, pull a torsion bar from the pass side. Then put the spring plate back in place. This will allow you to swing the suspension through the movement and make sure you have clearance.

10's should fit with the correct offset. you may have to make custom lines to clear the wheel. Shouldn't be too much of a problem on the 71 system. I am pretty sure you will have to shave bolts for camber/toe on the spring plate. Also the height adj. bolts if you swaped out spring plates.

On my ST I took the stock flare and pulled it out a bit. I like the look better and gained almost 3/4" of clearance, without rolling the lips.

Its your own body parts house that lists the RS flares as 8" width. It seems to be the only one that identifies them as such. Just FYI since it was said. ;)

i thought.... sc/carrera were 8" and rs/st were 9"???

I have no affiliation with Rennspeed other than being a happy customer. But they're in error if they list any factory-size 911 flare as 8-inch. I don't know if Porsche made much of an effort to 'name' the flare sizes, but RS/SC/Carrera-bodied cars have what is commonly labeled as '9 inch flares' in back.

No affiliation assumed. Just thought it was funny that it was them that confused me in their description and it simply was the panel company that you used..
