How to Replace Air Filter in '88 Cab?
 

Probably the dumbest question I've asked, but how the heck does one replace the air filter in a 3.2 Carrera? I unsnapped the clamps on the housing, but the air intake just kind of separates from the front and doesn't appear to be able to separate completely from the rest of the housing. Is it supposed to? Right now, I unclamp it and there's not enough room to pull the old air filter out. Ugh! I must be missing something.

Steve, there are 2 more clamps on the backside. Stand on the drivers side of the engine bay and reach around the back of the
flowmeter/fuel injection to reach the back 2 clamps.

Yes, it comes off completely

For clarity...the "horn" or trumpet is part of the front housing that comes off all in one piece...the horn does not separate from the front removable cover....

hint....do a "cup" conversion. Once the lid is off..hacksw the entire front face off leaving a 1" wide band that holds the filter in-place. Now you can "See" ( not just "feel") the four clamps....and provides a cleaner access to the right side of the engine for valve adjustments, oil filter changes, etc...

I think you may get into smog issues here if you modify the air filter housing. Seems ridiculous, but another Pelican here had issues with the visual on his '76 911s 3.0.

Don't have the absolute "ruling" on this, just something to consider.

Yep that would be me. I was told cutting the airbox was a "PVC modification" and was told to turn around and go home. Didn't even bother to run the car. Doesn't do anything for performance, but it does deepen the exhaust note a bit.
