Pictues of Drilled SC Airboxes?

Anyone have pictures of their drilled SC airboxes?

Before I go using a hole saw on mine I wanted to get a few ideas of how others have done it. Also wanted to get a feel for the different sized holes that are used.

TIA.

If you search this you will find that the feeling seems to be that there is no performance gain from this. Some however do prefer the change in induction sound, although there is greater risk of water entering the airbox. Instead some have cut off the horn and opened up both ends of the cover.

Having said this, I think you will find that those who do it are using 2 or 2 1/2" hole saws to make their openings.

Do yourself a favor and pick up a used airbox cover so that you can go back to stock if you don't like the change or make a mess of the original cover. I drilled out an airbox cover and I love the sound. No real power gain, but when the engine goes on cam it sounds like a 993 when the varioram kicks in.

Here's some more info:

I should have clarified and said that I will be doing this on a spare cover.

At the last DE my instructor drove an '80 SC and he said he felt like it was worth something coming out of a few turns on our home track so I figured what the heck, I'll give it a try.

For the next DE I am going to take both covers and alternate sessions to see if I can notice a difference.

I figure there has to be an optimal pattern/size so I just was looking to see what others had done so I had a few ideas before I went and cut up the spare.

Any pictures and additional first hand info would still be welcomed.

Thanks again.

For track use, why not try what the Ducati guys do, and run an "open" cover? What you do is just use some wire or straps to hold the air filter down - don't use a cover at all.

It's mainly for the change in sound, no power gain. But i do like the sound, and i did mine by triangulating three holes on the opposite side of the horn, then using a jigsaw to open an oval shaped hole. I don't have any pictures of it off hand, but i'm sure you can picture this in your head.

All those holes look cheesy.... swiss even.

The only thing the holes are good for is sound. To have more air come in, the air must have some way to get out. You have to change the exhaust to improve power.

I only put one hole on the end opposite of the air horn (right side) same size as the hole I put in the lower for the popoff valve. I used an unscientific way of determining if it needed more air.
Put one hand over the opening and felt how much pull it had and decided if I put it on the right side it wouldnt have any more chance of getting water that the left. Plus any more holes than it needs and it starts to lose torque on the bottom end(moves the peak hp further up the rev range). Also have a low restriction exhaust..testpipe... richen fuel...I'll post a pic later when I get a chance.

That's it I'm making one out of sheet metal. It will be open filter but have a little roof edge off the top for rain (although I never drive in it). I just put my car away for the week though, down the street. Project will have to wait.
