Flickering Lights Solved!
 

Thanks to everyone who responded to my prior S.O.S on what casued all my lights to just keep flickering.

Indeed the OEM voltage regulator that came with the car back in 1973 served its purpose for over thirty years and was one hell of a unit. Can't find those around anymore. I replaced it 18 months ago with the new Bosch solid state metal body unit that was half its size. Who could have thought that this new technology would fail so readily?! Well, I did install another new unit this past weekend that took care of the problem.

Lesson learned? If you have flickering lights consider the replacement "solid state" voltage regulator being the culprit.

Interesting. I replaced my original big honkin VR with one of the smaller metal ones when I had my alternator rebuilt a few months ago. I didn't know the smaller solid state ones were not reccomended. The guy who rebuilt my alternator said the smaller solid state ones were better than the old ones, but he also stood to make $21 from saying that (and he did). At any rate, I'll keep an eye on it and now I'm glad I saved the old one. What are other symptoms of the solid state VRs failing?

You cannot find the old VRs anymore. Porsche has superceeded them with this Bosch Solid State Unit. My issue was reliability.
One only 16 months old already failed! I never would have thought the problem with constantly flickering lights was this fairly new VR. Goes to show you that they do not make them like they used to.

Have seen things like this bad out of the box. Quality control and some parts are not as good as they were years ago (like our cars!) so its worth keeping an eye on them!
