Oil IN the SSI's??

The 80' SC has this issue. After sitting for an extended period of time the SSI's will actually have oil in them. This is not fun as it smokes through the heating system etc... Is there a common location for a leak which does this? I wouldn't think return tubes, since it seems I would have heard more about the smoking as a symptom, oil cooler maybe? Thanks in advance

Getting ready to get greasy again!

i think it is from the oil seeping past the rings and thru open exhaust valves...or I think it also gets by the valve seals...anyway it is a sing of age of your car

can't let it sit too long...or rebuild the engine

If it has sat for a while, just give it a nice long stretch of highway to burn off the oil before opening your heater

No, it's not a "while running warm thing". The engine is relatively new and shows NO smoking after the initial "pool" in the exchangers is burnt off. I think it is enering the exchngers from the outside. I know a little poking around will reveal the location, I just wondered if this is common. I'm not saying you're dead wrong, just that I would be shocked outta my guard if this amount of oil came from the rings/valves without smoke while running(after intial burnoff).

I agree, this is not oil seeping into the exhaust and then a cracked exhaust tube leaking smoke into the exchangers. If so you would be getting headaches from the C0 poisoning. On the other hand you must have a pretty good seal leak coming from somewhere. You have to investigate to find out where you can leak oil and have it drip down onto the TOP of the heat exchanger. Right off I am thinking top oil cooler seals. Perhaps the aluminum washer seals on the front oil pressure sending unit or the lines to the tensioners.

Thanks Kurt, that's what I was wondering and probably should have said it that way. My question should have been....If oil leaks on TOP of your SSI's will they allow it to seep into the heat exchangers or are they pretty well sealed? From the sound of your post, they are not totally sealed and I likely have a topside leak somewhere.

SSI's are a tight fit around the header pipes, but oil can definitely leak into the exchanger.

Len,
Look at your valve covers. If they are leaking I bet a little oil can get into your SSI.
