Steve W Chip + 1 Year
I have had a Steve W chip in my otherwise stock 1987 Carrera for just over a year now. I have since put 12,000 happy miles on it. My car now has 157,XXX miles on the original motor. An upcoming California Smog Check prompted me to change back to the stock chip for a few days before testing and--WOW!!! The Steve W chip really did make a huge difference in my car.
After changing back to the stock chip, my car feels downright lethargic. Steve's chip definitely opened up the lower range to about 4,000 RPM. Any hint of "Carrera 3.2 lag" is gone. Moreover, at about 4,700 RPM the kick in the butt that the 3.2 gives with the stock program is clearly more intense with the Steve W chip. Despite using my car as a daily driver, I still get a rush at WOT. I am even more satisfied with my chip now than I was a year ago. It's going back in today. Thank you very much Steve. Sincerely, Mike Oh yeah, my car passed smog with flying colors--wheew! |

Mike, thanks much for the kind words. We ought to meet up again and go for another 500 horse e-ticket ride.

Steve:
That was a real eye popper. Matt and I are very greatful for the face distorting ride you gave us in the black car! FWIW: I kept chip #1 in my car and never changed it out. It has been absolutely wonderful. Chip #2 (the earlier version you sent me) was never installed. I still have both (Ooops). If you were using my car as a daily driver, which Steve W chip would you install/re-install? Should I try the version #1 chip you sent me, or stick with the version #2 chip we installed at your house? Thanks again Steve. Sincerely, Mike |

Momo3.2
I just did the Cali Smog drill a week ago and never chaged the SW chip I had in, it passed and was WAY under what was allowed for polltants (sp?). I did pull the euro pre-muff and re-install the cat, after looking at results next time I'm leaving the pre-muff on. Steve, Will the re-mapping of the chip for the pre-muff make a significant difference? It seems to run great now. I'm another satisfied user of the S Wong chip after more than a year.

Hey Steve,
I have had my SW chip for about 3 months now and my car runs great. In regards to the recent thread of 3.2 0-60 stock times averaging around 5.5 seconds and real top end at 157.7 mph, does anyone out there have 0-60 times with a SW chip on a 3.2 Carerra and any other such data? And no Loren, I don't want to hear from you. ![]()

You know the old addage: "you don't know what you've got till you lose it..." I may have to switch out for a day just to see how bad the "good old days" were.
Maybe all SW Chip owners should pic one day a year to put the old chip back in just to remember how much better we have it now. Then, we need to send a condolense card to Loren (well, maybe not).

Mike, I'd stick to what works, #1 sounds like the ticket.
Rick, I know a customer who passed CA smog with a chip similar to what you have, with only SSIs and sport muffler - no cats. With modified exhausts, depending on the mods, there are a couple of areas addressed in the chip mapping for the change in the exhaust backpressure. WOT fuel mapping, especially above 4500 is programmed according to the exhaust configuration. The second area addressed is the part throttle region in the low load, low rpm region that with a reduction in exhaust backpressure, can result in exhaust popping and/or backfiring on throttle closure after acceleration. A lower backpressure can also result in a lean surge condition which is most noticeable in low speed stop and go driving. As an example, here is an excerpt of an email from a customer that I thought was quite humorous: 10/02/2004 I own an 84 Carrera. I recently upgraded the exhuast from completely stock (with cat) to SSI's and Dansk single outlet sport muffler. The performance increase was a nice bump but now while performing full throttle up shifts I get a wicked backfire when the throttle is lifted to shift. A 10 inch flame shoots out the tail pipe concurrent with the backfire. My freinds say it looks cool but I am a little weary. I had a very fortunate chance to talk with Bruce Anderson about this. He feels it is most likely a fueling issue that can be corrected with a chip. Thus he referred me to you guys. There are no exhaust or intake leaks and I live at aprox. 4000' above sea level (if it matters). . 10/16/2004 Hi Steve, I installed the chip and everything works great. I also had to convert the ECU to 4K with the supplied jumper and unplug the CA emissions plug. Interestingly when I openned up the ECU there was already a chip installed from Performance. It feels as though the low and high end are much improved, idle is better, everything feels smoother and no more backfires. If you do decide to go with a revised chip, a side benefit would be the upgrade to the superior 4k programming as used in the 87 up 911s, as opposed to the 2k programming of the 84-86 cars. I no longer ship 2k chip programs for U.S. spec cars. The benefits are primarily a much improved throttle response on emissions controlled U.S. cars. In addition, all chips shipped within the past year have implemented a heavily revised, proprietary idle coding which eiliminates sub idle surging such as with aging idle control valves, using the AC, upgraded cams, or lightweight flywheels. Sub idle surging is caused by the fuel injectors being shut off on throttle closure until the rpms drop to 1000 rpm, at which point they turn back on. This gives the idle control valve little time to catch the idle rpm. Raising the fuel turn on to around 1500, allows the rpms to drop like normal to about 1000 rpm, at which point it floats down to 880 rpm within a second as if there was a damper on the throttle linkage. Also the typical 50 rpm fluctuation at idle from the O2 sensor modulation is virtually eliminated by reshaping the idle control curve which guides the motor to lock to 880 rpm at idle. The result is a superior idle to stock that you may have read others post about previously. |

Hi Steve,
I've got an '84 Carrera that I've owned for about three months now. I believe it's got a stock chip and exhaust system. I will be purchasing a chip from you within the next month or maybe less. You just mentioned that you sell only the 4k chip programs. Will that be a problem for my car since it's an '84? Is it still a straight swap from the stock chip? -Scott Last edited by 450knotOffice; 11-27-2004 at 08:13 PM.. |

It won't be a problem at all, as these 4k programs are intended solely for the 84-86 911s such as yours that run on the 2k program. Basically you clip off one jumper on the DME board, and solder a new one (which is provided) in the adjacent slot to enable the DME to read a 4k chip. Afterwards, you can still run your old chip. The chip is a straight swap into the existing socket. Also, many if not most 85-86 911s are already 4K enabled, so there is no need to do the jumper mod.

Steve,
Whats the cost of the 4k chip if I send you my 2k chip, also would want it set up for the euro pre-muff. Thanks

Rick, for existing customers, swapping from one standard configuration to another is $75. Updating your chip for the latest program tweaks or such as going from 2k to 4k is always free.

Steve,
Nice to see you back on the board. BTW I'm very happy with the chip you made for my rig.
