How much $$ to replace 2nd gear synchro?
 

I had a PPI done on a 1983 911. The wrench said second gear synchro is going and may last about a year with conservative driving. He said normally all synchros are replaced when the engine is dropped.

Would someone give me an idea of the costs? If it's excessive then I guess I'll have to pass on this deal. I was so busy with writing the details (long distance) I forgot to ask.

Also how much to replace all four shocks?

What's the cost/benefit of dropping the tranny myself and sending it to someone like Gary Fairbanks to rebuild? I can probably figure out how to drop and re-attach a tranny, but rebuilding one is beyond me.

But if you have a good tranny with synchros that are worn, would it make sense to make a pre-emptive strike and just replace/flip synchroes as needed?

It is not that complicated but issues can develop. I did mine with the help of a friend who had been in his tranny a couple times before. The expense is some of the tools you need, such as a decent press. Find some guy in your local PCA region who is a gearhead (literally) and ask him to help you do it. Once in there, it makes sense to replace all major wear items, not just the worn out components.

I had the same situation (long distance shopping)...'83 as well. A local shop in my area quoted 1200 to replace the syncro...1700 to do them all. You never know what your getting into until you get it open. I believe that.

The bright side is once it's done...you have a fresh 915 you don't have to worry about.

Honestly, dropping the engine/tranny out was the most "difficult" part of the whole evolution. And I have to say, that if I had something more sturdy than a floorjack, even THAT part of it would have been a lot easier. I had help with that part, but, there are several people here who have done it ALL by themselves. (*Note* When I say by themselves, I mean "physically". There was, as I said, loads of help provided here.)

Going off of my own experience, doing it yourself will definitely bring you closer to your car and really give you a sense of accomplishment. I was nervous...no....I think I was actually afraid, to do it myself, but with the assistance of several members here, I now believe I could do it myself if I have to again.

You can buy a rebuilt one from Vertex Automotive in FLA that comes with a 1 year warranty for about $1600. You have to send them yours as a core trade in.

I bought a rebuilt 915 from Vertex about 12 yr ago for about $1100 US. 75000 mi later it's still good.

Hey Randy - you must have been voting last Tuesday at the church on Whitlock - had to be your car i saw there when I drove by. Great looking car. I have a red turbo look targa, but it's a slantnose. I'm about to have my 915 rebuilt by Peter at Performance Imports, and the estimate is $1,200 to $1,500.

Gary Fairbanks is local to me, and although I havent used his service yet, most of the shops in the area do. Nothing but good reviews. Because he specializes in Porsche trannys, he can do 'em right and quick. My mechanic estimated about $1200 for synros, and up to $2000 for disaster recovery. Of course ya gotta add some for shipping and such...

$4000 seems a little steep to me.

The synchro ring second gear only cost me $61.37 p/n 915.302.301.04.

but the 915 gasket set was $97.92 p/n 915.300.311.01

Performance Imports? Isn't that the place on S. Marrieta Pkwy...up on the hill? Don't have any experience with them, hope he treats you right. For that price, it sounds like a great deal.

Hey....you didn't happen to be driving south on S. Cobb Drive earlier this week, were you? Could have been Election Day Tuesday, around 10:00 or so. I saw someone fitting your description who took a left onto Windy Hill, if I remember correctly. If that was you, then you've got a great looking car yourself!!! :D

Hey Randy. Performance imports is in Doraville. Bob Sanderson and Peter Wendt are the Porsche guys there. They come highly recommended. I was going to use Ryland's off Cobb Parkway on Airport Industrial, which was also highly recommended, but I got a good feeling talking to Peter. I'll use him unless you want to do it for $750 :)

$4000 is about right if you replace every bearing, the synchro's, the dogteeth and sliders for every gear.

Vertex does what I do. Use minimal new parts, used parts and keep what is in pretty good shape. Parts alone to replace everything with new run over $3000.

I may have heard people on this board speak of Performance Imports, but again, I have no experience with them myself.

Rylands, however, I've heard good things about. There are a few guys in my neighborhood who own p-cars and they use them quite a bit. They practically swear by them. I'm thinking the next time something major comes up I'll give them a try. Unless, of course, I'm brave enough to try fixing it myself.
