possible head stub replacement
A couple of quick questions:
- The PO had the top end rebuilt 2 years and only 15,000 miles ago. Assuming that the head studs were replaced then, and one has since broken, do I have an argument with the mechanic to have them fix it for free or at a reduced rate? What will replacing a one side lower stud cost me anyways? |
If they were replaced with steel 993 or raceware studs they should last at least 20 years, 200k miles. They must have used dilivar. Or it's just bad luck and you had a defective stud. You never replace one stud. The engine has to be torn down, so you should replace all the lower studs. It doesn't help that you were not the customer, but the mechanic may give you a discounted rate as he knows this should not happen.

Most likely the studs were never replaced. They should have been replaced if the mechanic is knowledgable about Porsches. Maybe he will give you some kind of dicount on replacing the studs since this should have been done on the rebuild. The PO may have baulked at the cost of replacing the studs in which case you'll have to eat it.

I wouldn't even ask. Who's to say someone didn't overtorque them in two years?
And PS, if he didn't replace the studs back then, I wouldn't use him further. |
Do it yourself and do it rignt. I am sick of imcompetent mechanic.
