G-50 feel from 915 Tranny???
In the process of putting together a car, I understand that there are several tricks to making a 915 tranny shift and feel like a Honda Accord. Naturally, the way to go is a g-50 but pockets are NOT deep so can I take the old vw feel out of my 1986 915? Are there problems associated with fitting a 3.2 and 915, or fitting my 3.2 and a g-50 into a 70T chassis. I know the g-50 tranny just bolts up but being a hydraulic unit what do I run into??? Does anyone have a plug and play g-50 for under 2K for sale or know where one is? Is the g-50 desirable for a track/ race car or is the 915 better? I have a perfect 915 out of the 86 that i can use just trying to be the best that I can be! Any and all thoughts would be appreciated!!! Thanks, Mark
82 sc widebody/ or 70T who knows? |

Putting a G-50 into any non G50 car is a pain and expensive. If you've already got the 915, I say use that. The early 3.2's used 915's, why can't you. Especially since your car is going to be lighter than the car that it originally came out of. That will be even less stress on the tranny. I can also tell you that a 915 can be made to shift like butter. When I was looking for a 911 a few years back I drove an 84 that shifted as good as any car I've even driven. The owner told me that in Maryland he had had a rebuilt tranny put in. The mechanice had rebuilt the tranny for his daughter who didn't need it for some reason, so he then put it in this guys car. THat mechanic can't be the only one in the world who can get a 915 to work that well. Other than the obvious of having the internal parts work as well as possible I think it's also very important to have the shift mechanism and the clutch cable, helper spring, etc, working top notch.

a properly rebuilt 915 with fresh linkages will shift like a dream, and in fact some people prefer the feel compared to a G50.

I've had 2 different G50 transmissions, and they did shift great, but that one sweet 915 that I drove, if my memory serves correctly, shifted more smoothly than either G50. But, the G50's shifted consistently, any gear, any speed, up or down, they always worked the same which is good.

Use the 3 major WEVO parts (internal gate, shifter and coupler) when you rebuild your box and you'll have a tranny that many G50s guys think is better than what they have.
That is what a few have said after driving mine anyway. Steve added something worth mentioning aagain and I suspect is what holds up many a 915. Quote:

that's always been my observation. 915 trannies can be all over the map depending on their condition, and most of them out there are tired. G50s seem to all shift about the same no matter how many miles, but compared to my 915 (which is really nice), my old G50 seemed a bit numb.

The tranny I plan on using is coming out of a wrecked 86 carerra car that only had 23K original miles. Would you still go through it before instalation? and do I have to go into the trans to put the wevo parts in play? Thanks, Mark

Does anyone know of a top tranny person located as close to Columbus Ga as possible who could look at my 915 tranny prior to install who would know about the wevo stuff?

with 23K miles, assuming the previous driver wasn't an idiot, that 915 should be great. I would probably put in new shifter linkage bits (bushings, coupler, etc), and as said above, clutch cable, omega spring, etc. If youve got the money, going with Wevo stuff is great.

As nobody has mentioned it, the biggest problem with fitting a G-50 in a 915 car are the dimensions of the transmission. Some work has to be done on the chassis to fit the G-50.
