The "little deutsche coupe" gets a new booty (pics)

I got a nice deal on some fiberglass SC flares over eBay and finally got the car on the ground (after an extensive suspension rebuild) to take some pictures of the mock-up. I still need to get the bumper extensions so you'll have to use your imagination. Im planning on riveting them on {evil laugh} but I haven't decided if Im going to do it yet.

Before you purists freak out, you should know that my poor little targa has extensive body damage (twist, rust, dents, the works) so Im not afraid of "experimentation". Eventually Id like to run 16x9s in the rear, but I'm going to need to find some funds first.

I've only seen people do this on racecars (and on the GT2) but I think the effect is damn-fine. I haven't seen anyone this board do it yet, so heres my contribution:

Go for it. SC extensions will be easy to find.

I like the look of rivted or bolted with button head Allens. I was planning on doing that with my 914 eventually.

However, the in-plain-view fastening system needs to be balanced with some type of similar work on the front fenders.

If you are going to use these and the bigger tires/wheels that will ultimately fit, you will have to cut out the existing wheel arch. Why not just go the few extra steps and bond them on? Once you scribe the line and cut below it a couple of inches, you're a third done.

yeah, I would like to add something to the front fenders but SC is about as wide as I want to go (can't afford turbo arms and spindles to run 935/Turbo fenders).

I agree that the bolt-on systems need to be properly "balanced" to work with the rest of the car. I don't know much about bonding, but I don't like the idea of seeing the "seam" between the flare and the metal without seeing some kind of fastener. My feeling is that bonding requires actual bodywork to mold in the flare into the body and that sounds like money to me.

I like the riveted look too. Makes it look fast standing still. Is the IROC wing next or is that for race day only?

Why not go for a fiberglass RS type rear bumper. Lighter and matches the flares. Slightly more expensive than extensions though.

Just BACKDATE the Deutche bag! Unless you are going to build a 935-esque car, I would bond the fenders and fill the seam. I'm afraid it would look ghetto unless you went all out on the "purpose" built theme.

Eventually Id like to run fiberglass bumbers (IROCs) but its all about funding right now. God, theres so much on the list:

headlights
bumpers
brakes
rollbar
harnesses
tranny rebuild
16x9s
paint for all the fiberglass parts I've bought (hood, flares, wing)

All good things in time

I have to tell you, I was one tortured soul yesterday morning when I started this. Sitting on the garage floor, angle grinder with cutting wheel in hand, saying small prayers, wondering if Im insane... Once the sparks started flying I started to relax, and was soon acting like a kid in a candy shop. Who knew that cutting your car apart could be so fun?!@$

It took most of the day to get them put on. I took her out for a nice shake-down this afternoon and all appears to be fine. There are a few bugs that need to be worked out and I still need SC bumper extensions, but, like I mentioned above, Im totally happy with the results. Hope you like it too.

I like it, Matt. I'm summoning up the courage to do flares on my '75. One of these days....

sorry, no such luck. Depending on what Souk is cooking up with Diamond Racing Wheels, I may be dumping two pairs of 16x7s. The 15s just look too damn good on the car to get rid of them, Im sure you understand
