What engine is this? (engine # provided)

I missed my ol' 911E Targa, sso I'm about to purchase a sweet 1973 911T Targa with a 3.0 transplant! Well...that's what the guy SAYS it is. :)

The engine number is 6581237. What engine does this number indicate? I you don't know, please let me know where I can find out.

Thanks for the help...will post pics soon if I buy her.

Patrick C. Paternie writes in the...

"Porsche 911 Red Book 1965-1999" that your engine number is an:

L Series engine - produced from Aug 1977 to July 1978. Need a VIN to tell what sort of (Targa or Coupe) body it was nipped from. The author can only ID the engine #'s as 6580001 - on. This is for both body types.

Other than that....It is a 49 State 911SC 3.0 liter 930/06 engine.

Hope that helps. Shawn. :(

Thanks Shawn...all I really wanted to know is that it's a 3.0 SC engine. I wish it was a later model, but a '78SC engine is fine with me. Will update when I purchase the car!

In general, the early 1977-78 engines are considered slightly better than the later 1980-83 ones. Although they had extra smog equipment (easily removed), they have the larger port heads, which are the desired ones for performance upgrades.

That said, for all intensive purposes, all of the SC engines are basically the same...

Thanks, Wayne...I'll keep that in mind. I'll check back when I'm ready for performance upgrades.
