Back up Light not Working
 

After finishing the rebuild and putting it back in the car, am now 350 miles towards the first 500 mile oil change.

However, the back-up light is not working. I think I know where the wires attach to the "nose" of the transmission, but where do they go after that? How do they get to the engine compartment, and then to the back-up lights?

Also, there is an electrical connection hanging loose on the left side of the transmission, but no matching "partner" into which to connect it. Might this be my back-up light wiring? It's one of the square-in-cross-sectrion plastic connectors, clear plastic (now yellow with age), and about 1" to 1-1/2" long. It has a short-ish wire and is hanging down.

So far so good with the re-build. Once warm, it seems strong and eager. Luckily it's getting coolere here in the Palm Beaches, and thus a good time to break it in.

Anyway, the car in question is a 1983 911SC, with a 915 transmission, all stock and all original.

I seem to remember a couple of plastic connectors like you describe in the tunnel, which is awful close to the tranny. Is it possible the connector you see ought to be connected to something in the tunnel?

No clue where those wires from the switch go to, but have you checked to make sure it's still plugged in? Does the switch itself operate (check for open/closed state when in R and some other gear)? Did it fail before the rebuild, during the rebuild, or after the rebuild?

I reported to JW recently that my backup light was not working. I asked if the sender can be replaced with the tranny still in the car. He said yes, but more than likely the sender is fine. He suggested checking the wire to the sender. He says they corrode where the wire enters the tiny round plug connector. It is this tiny round plug connector, at the end of this wire, that slips into the reverse light sender on the tranny. I'd guess your hanging wire is the problem. It so happens that the tiny round connector is separately available. John's got a box of them.

Is the connector a porsche part? I've been looking for one with no success
