help ,replacing clutch cable 1983 sc
was driving and went to shift and depressed clutch pedal,it lost all tension ,stayed to the floor,installed new helper spring,and am attempting to reinstall new clutch cable but it wont go all the way back to firewall, there is a tube of steel sticking out about 1 inch,can slide it on about half way,any suggestions? also could there be another reason for the pedal to stay to the floor?

The metal tube protruding rearward from the firewall is normal. Often when people install a new clutch cable they think it's fully, then they push the pedal and the cable housing slides fully onto that tube. So, keep pushing or use the clutch pedal for leverage once you get it all hooked up. You'll need to readjust at the gearbox after it fully slides on.
Other things that could cause the "dead" pedal are: the roll pin between pedal and pivot shaft through pedal cluster could have snapped. This causes the pedal to travel to the floor and since it's no longer affixed to the shaft it'll stay down. If this is the case you sould be able to move the pedal up and down without activation the clutch. Also, the pivot shaft can snap where the roll pin goes through. It has the same effect. At the other end of the pivot tube where the cable actually attaches could have worn through. Again, giving the same effect. On my '83 I decided to change the cable for prev. maint. purposes. I am glad I did because my pivot shaft at the pedal end was about halfway broken and at the cable end it had sawed almost fully through. Is the car stuck in gear? Does the clutch still work even though the pedal will not return (by itself) to the upright position? I hope this helps.

If your clutch cable did not break or begin to pull apart, it most likely is your roll pin in your pedal assembly. I recently had this happen to me in my 86. Not a very hard job, just time consuming and it's like a $0.99 part.

thanks for the help attached cable used pedal to pull cable forward and nothing happened, dead pedal i guess thanks again for all suggestions
