Tachometer differences in SC and Carrera?

My face plate is scratched and red line faded. Checked on a new replacement at Pelican Parts and noticed a huge price discrepancy between the SC and Carrera Tachs and they also have different part numbers. Can I not use a Carrera Tach on my SC?

The Carrera tach is 3.5x as much as the SC tach here, but not on eBay.;)

The Carrera tach has an upshift indicator which requires a special chip in the tach.
As a result, there's an additional tach input from the DME unit.

Thanks Loren. The shift indicator occurred to me, but I didn't see the arrow in the generic PP pictures.

In the picture below, is that an upshift arrow just below center?

Do all 3.2 Carreras have an up-shift light? I've never seen one on my '89 3.2 (Euro) - maybe it's not working or maybe I'm just not trying hard enough! Must go out and check in the garage!

Richard,

You don't want it to come on. Apparently it's programmed to light up at shift points that conserve fuel. Unless thats why you bought yours.....

If yours had one, you would see it. It comes on way early, and I drive the canyons in 3rd with the upshift light glowing away!

carrue529 11-09-2004 11:49 AM

are you able to remove the bulb to keep it from lightingh up

Kill the chip and rewire the bulb to light at redline.

Terry,

The upshift indicator light is a pain. I covered mine up! This was a EPA thing back in the 80's to try to keep the mileage up ...

Thanks guys. So, can I assume the Carrera tach will work in my SC sans the shift light?

ChrisBennet 11-09-2004 02:54 PM

The Carrera's upshift light (aka CASIS light) does two things:
- It comes on when you should upshift to conserve fuel.
- It comes on when you (almost?) hit redline.

If you remove the black wire from the back of the tach it will kill the stupid upshift light but it will still light it at redline.

No, our Euro models does not have the shift-light. Europeans know when to shift, they are not brought up with auto transmissions.. ;)

Just another sign of the superior quality of the SC over the overweight Carrera...we doan need no steenking upshift light....

livi 04-06-2007 02:35 AM

I agree. With CIS you get hopeless mileage anyway. :D
