Desperately Need a DME Control Board for 3.2
 

Last weekend, I was tooling around in my 1987 Targa enjoying the 70 degree weather here in Denver. At a stop sign, my pride and joy just stalled. It would crank but would not fire up. I humbly pushed her to the side of the road. Per this web-site's advise, I keep a spare DME relay in my glove. I replaced the old one with the new but it still would not start.

I had the car towed to a shop that I trust highly. They trouble shooted the entire electrical system. While the car would crank strong there was still no spark.

They removed the DME Control Unit and inspected all of the solder connections with a jewelers loop and did not find any cracked or disconneced solders.

While rare, my mechanic did say that he has seen a few of these DME control units fail over the years. Since I cannot afford to buy a new one, he is trying to locate a used one for me through all of his contacts.

I am now on the hunt as well. If anyone knows where I can purchase a used DME control unit for a 1987 Carerra (3.2), I would pay the asking price plus all shipping and owe the finder a dept of gratitiude.

Also, you may not be able to see a faulty solder joint. You may want to try going over what you can with an iron.

There's a place called Pelican Parts which has many sources for Porsche new and
rebuilt parts. Try them. I think you can find them on the Internet. Do a Google or
Yahoo search.

The questions that get posted????

Possible problems:

1. bad coil
2. bad grounds or +12 volt main source to DME relay
3. no coil +12 volts from ignition switch
4. pickup sensors
5. DME unit (get a known good one for test)

it's probably one of the flywheel sensors.

Just a quick update:

I did contact Pelican Parts regarding a DME control Board. They are out of stock and the item is on back order for up to 6 weeks.

The search continues! Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

You have some excellent advice to get started with from the experts, John and Loren.

Call Tom Gould at Pelican. You obviously spoke to the WRONG guy. With a delivery
quote like that, he's really the WRONG guy. Pelican has MULTIPLE sources which
results in great delivery times for all products! That's their niche. You just need to
get to the "right" people.

Pelican can test and rebuild (if necessary) your unit with a three day turn-around.

Thank you for the referal. Tom Gould was very helpful and informed me that Pelican will repair the DME unit for a fraction of the replacement cost. I now have the option that I was looking for and am again indepted to this Forum.

I was unable to see my cracked solder joints the first time I looked for them. I had to look with bright sunlight and a strong magnifying glass. Check this link for some pics. Thanks to Wayne and the board, I was able to do this repair myself at home.
