changing oil pressure strip gauge inside dial

I am wondering if the oil pressure strip gauge from a 84-89 911 Carerra can be removed from the dial instrument housing and installed in the '73 dial gauge in place of the one that is stock in a '73?

I know the 356 people do this to their gauges. Can you do it in a 911?

Reason: The sender on my '86 engien will not run the stock '73 gauge. (And the screw-in orifices are different sizes. The great adapter fix that Jim Sims posted about in 2001 won't work here, as the sender I need to use is larger than the mounting point.)

So, unless somebody has a better idea, I plan to change the gauge itself to work with the new sender.

The Carrera or SC gauge internal 'half' will fit perfectly in a '73 gauge housing. Other option below ...

Your car's engine has an oil pressure switch up on top of the engine near the engine oil thermostat ... I believe the early pressure sender will fit perfectly in place of the pressure switch.

Thanks Warren. You're right the early sender fits perfectly there -- one is there now. The problem is that position is apparently used for the oil temperature sender which now no longer works.
