New Ducktail from TRG...I like it!
Got my new duck in from The Racer's Group. At first glance, it is of very good quality-I think they source from Getty Design? At any rate, the finish seems very good, we'll see how it fits. On with the new...

Looks good and yes TRG sells Getty Design parts
|
I was kinda hesitant to buy a new one, figuring I'm the one who'll be responsible to take care of manufacturing flaws, but if the fit is good, my job will be easy.
|
The biggest givaway to Getty Designs stuff is the black gel coat. For some reason they are one of (if not the only one) that uses black...
My GT-Racing doors were sourced from Getty. Sometimes when some companies run out of product they use what they can find... |
My duck tail from MA Shaw had black gel coat.
Jim |
I don't think MA Shaw or most other companies actually manufactur their own parts... That's why they can be sort of hit and miss fit wise.
|
I wouldn't rely on black gel coat to ID a Getty-made ducktail. My black-gelled ducktail from Performance required 13 hours of reshaping and refitting; making a good deal not so good in the long run. I doubt it was made by Getty.
Sherwood |
I bought my RSA tail from Getty. Neal was very easy to deal with and he really knew their products. I also considered GT Racing, but chose Getty because they are in the same state.
|
MA Shaw sells Getty Parts

I see your point. However, my 3.8 tail direct from Getty required a significant amount of massaging as well. At least 8 hours. Far more than my Gt-Racing duck did... Which was white...??? |
Yes MA Shaw, the Race Group, TRG and many others sells Getty Parts
|
geof33,
FG molds wear out eventually with the early copies being more faithful to the original shape than the last ones pulled. I guess we were not as fortunate in the versions we had to work with. Sherwood |
Well I've got my fingers crossed on me not having to do a lot of "massaging". IMO, some of the fit woes experienced by others could be at least partially due to the variance in these cars.
|
Ed:
Porsche has some of the most accurate body tolerances in the industry....don't go there....see other posts I've engaged-in on that. The variation is with the plastic parts....same thing as the variation in tires used ( size of the rubber)...not the "accuracy" of the fender when certain over-size tires don't fit and rub..... Wil |
Good luck on the fit Ed. My GT Racing tail took some significant work to get the lines to line up.
|
I'm not going to hijack this thread into a discussion on body accuracies, fender wells on these things do vary.
|
Left is different than right...true...but that doesn't mean they *vary*..it simply means the body is not symmetrical...a true, but different thing.
Plus..if you don't know the history of the car..it may have been re-assembled before with less-than factory tolerances. Other than that....for the *most* part... I stand by my earlier statement. If there are body fit variations...they are sub-order to ( either) tire rubber size differences or f'glass differences not matching. Not saying it doesn't happen...just saying the relative influence and ranking of these things... I'll shut up now ..... :) :) Wil PS--- I hope ( and believe) you're piece goes well...it should. |

Lots of photos if you can do it too.:D |
Rennspeed uses the black gelcoat also. I had a Getty ducktail last year that was white and looked identical to GT Racing glass that I had bought before that . This stuff all seems like it comes from the same place.
|
Sherman,
It does... I don't know why we all insist on believing it doesn't. If anybody is the "manufacturer" it is Getty. I know for a fact that GT Racing sources at least some of their products from Getty... Molds required to do this work are crazy big and expensive. One thing about GT Racing, whomever "builds" their stuff it has their logo on it/in it. They are the only FG parts that I have seen with logos. So Hank has these made "for him"... |
Wait a minute, I believe everything that I read here ( ;) ), are you telling me that MA Shaw does NOT make his own ducktails? Everything I every believed to be true up til this point in time regarding MA Shaw must be a lie? Oh well, life goes on. ;)
Edit: Oh, efhughes3, good luck with the fit. It doesn't matter how little or great the fitment work will be, in the end, it will be well worth it! :) |
Sorry Scott, Ma Shaw... GT... HRE etc... all source from Getty... I've seen invoices... No big secret. But overall it shows that, again FG is FG. Some fit great, some not so great, mistakes are made and others are perfect. You never know. I do think that some of the companies have some say so as to how the products they represent get finished/handled, possibly with some "custom" tuning features. For instance, GT Racing hoods etc come with bolts and bonded inserts, as well as a few other reinforcements etc... Other "identical" parts I've seen were different. So the confusion continues.
|
I was being a little facetious, but it is true, I always thought MA Shaw did his own work. Maybe I learned something new today? I've also read sooooo many threads about ducks, and I have come to one undeniable, irrefutable conclusion....I don't know which one is best. Every single company has had some scrutiny, so I guess it is a gamble on any fiberglass aftermarket product (yes, including bumpers). But, ducktails look cool!

I think that the manufacturer(s) of these FG parts use whatever color gelcoat they happen to have around. I seem to remember someone who makes these telling me this when I inquired about the whole "color ID" thing. It is so inconsequential to them that when they run out of white some day they use black/grey/etc....
FWIW, I had a grey one that seemed to be high quality, but I never mounted it and can't remember who bought it around here. |
The ducktail has been on quite a while now, it fit pretty well, no re-finishing out of the ordinary...http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1113010443.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1113010543.jpg

Great fit and good looking duck...
http://iamsparticus.co.uk/images/yellow-duck.gif Count your lucky stars you didn't have to get a refund from TRG ! Mike Shaw may not make his own glass but at least he backs up what he sells. TRG does neither from my experience. |

Speaking of grey, I don't know why more parts aren't fabraicted with primer gel. It's perfect for blocking out the part for painting. |
If they all come from the same guy, why not buy from him,....wouldn't he have a more vested interest and theoretically more room to actually do something to rectify problems?

Aw, shucks....Thanks Guys! But there are plenty of awesome looking 911's that we all get the pleasure of seeing on this board.
Do you guys want to look under her skirt? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1113052782.jpg |

I have in the past talked with Gary Kempton, who apparently makes a ducktail like the original factory one...metal frame with fibreglas spoiler. Price (a while ago) was $950, but then again, the metal frame ought to make the fit a bit better, not to speak of making it more stiff and likely less prone to cracking.
Anyone have experience with Gary (Made by Hand)? Dennis |
How did you do the brushed targa bar?
Did you buy a replacement or refinish the old one? What about the Stainless steel rear window seal? Where else do you have stainless trim? |

Duck candidate...
I'm thinking about getting a ducktail for "Helga". Ed's car looks so good with one that maybe I'll try it too!
