3.2 Footwell Blower + Heater Backdate = Failure!!!

For those who have been following my tech article Tech Article on getting the footwell blowers to work without the engine blower, I have an update. Apparently the ballast resistor can't handle constant use. The ceramic resistor becomes brittle and vibration from driving eventually breaks it apart. Oh well, I guess I will next try the rewiring of the automatic heat console.

Great. Just when I think I'm ready. Sorry to hear it didn't work. It sure sounded good. Thanks for the update.

Just saw your post on the ballast resitor... mine hasn't blown yet.

this guy houses it in a box and it looks to be isolated from vibration...

there's also other resistor options that are much more rugged. how about this bad boy...

It's like driving around with a toaster in your engine bay.

Document rewiring the auto heater control

All the backdaters (and auto-heat control haters) could use the detail on that!
Thanks,

Chris

Okay, well, I got my footwell blowers to work without the engine blower on my 3.2.
In fact, the switch on my car for the headlight washers is now the "full-on-gimme-heat-til-I-die" switch now. Kicks them in, and they work great. I just disconnected the two wires for the washers and and hooked up a couple of extensions that run from between the seats under the carpet and behind everything up to that switch below the speedo.

Hey Kurt - some of the better quality resistors have the element embeded in epoxy, so they're a lot more durable. I think you just had a cheap resistor. One of the links above might lead to somthing like that, haven't had time to look.

Any chance the updated 993 a/c fan and oil cooler ballast resistors would work? They look a lot more robust and are coated in epoxy. I don't have a photo of one, but there should be some on www.p-car.com. They are known weak spots in 993's and I think they've been improved upon.

Thanks for the pointers. I will order one of the aluminum house resistors and see what happens! Updates and pictures to come.

Just ordered one of these (50watt, 50 ohm resistor):

Kurt... keep us posted. I'm going to order one of those things anyway. I'd also like to find a better location for it.

Note the bottom pic in this thread... can you see the ballast resistor sitting back there? That ain't a pretty location.

My $25 heater backdate for 3.2 w/pics

I think with the resistors we are using it has to be in that location due to the heat it puts off. I will let you know how hot the aluminum housed one gets after I install it.

Couldn't you just hook up a relay to the fan wire to make the footwell blowers run. I don't think using all that electricity to complete the circuit will help the battery and charging system. There has to be a better way.
