Deep 6s and flat 6 fuchs - difference (pic)

Rear, inside closeup pics would be helpful, too, as I suspect very few people are aware of the reinforcement ribs on the early, tube-type wheels ... that radiate out from the root of the spokes outwards towards the inner (back) side. |

No problem Warren. Here is a pic of a pair of deep 6s plus a picture of the inside of the rims. The fully polished deep 6, clearly shows why these rims get their name. Also the last picture shows the raised lip around the valve hole, flat 6s do not have this feature. One query tho - do all flat sixes have a safety bead, or just the later ones? See the 1st pic for the ambiguity. |
I have some deep 6's with no safty bead is it a must to run tubes with these?? I just run around on the street, no track or autocross just normal every day driving

Sorry for the confusion, all flat style 6s have a safty bead. Its the earlier (1969-some time within 1971) deep 6s which do not have this beading. The flat 6 in the first picture does have the beading, but it is not very clear. |

The safety beads have no relationship to the use of tubes. The safety beads prevent the tire from leaving the bead in the event of a rapid deflation. this could occur with or without tubes. Deep 6s are fine without tubes. -Scott |
Scott is right about the safety bead humps and tubless tires. VW went to tubless tires in 1957, but didn't incorporate safety bead humps until 10 years later. Porsche was obviously a little slow, and just happened to upgrade both at the same time.

The difference is only in the inner lip. From the mounting face out they are identical. All they did was stretch the inner rim. It seems the deep Fuchs are more valuable even tho they are _less_ safe, and harder to clean....

Remember if you want to mix the front and rear size..... Then use the early fuchs....the late(flat 6) don't match up with the early fuchs style. The Fuchs "Star" are not the same size "early deep vs. late flat" I will run my early 4.5's front and 5.5's or early 6's back when I find some for the back ......sold my late/flat 6's because the don't match up with my 4.5's Alan.....Just married 2 month ago ;) so all good |

************* Alan; let me echo the 'thanks for a great post' comment. i will add one thing about the "bump" section around the valve stem area. this seems to have been "flattened out" sometime in '71. ie; no variation in the overall opening between the 2 spokes where the valve stem lives. i can post a pic, but will take a couple of days. someone else maybe have one handy. i think there were some of these on the 'for sale' page. on a different topic, i hear some say that there is a problem finding valve stems for these wheels due to the excessive depth of the forging at that point. comments ? thanks again cheers jerry |

So this thread got me thinking about the possibilities of having deep fuchs on my '69 912. I went out today and looked at the rims, they have the 901.361.012.04 part number but are 5.5Jx15's. Are these considered "deep" fuchs? They have several of the features that were described in this thread.

Yours 5.5's are early fuchs and also good to have here are some parts number: Early fuchs 901.xxx.... 901.361.012.01 4.5x15 42mm offset - 100mm backsize 901.361.012.04 5.5x15 42mm offset - 112mm backsize 901.361.012.06 6x15 36mm offset - 112mm backsize *deep dish * 901.361.012.05 7x15 49mm offset - 138mm backsize *911R* Late fuchs 911.xxx.... 911.361.020.10 6x15 late/flat hope it helps Alan.UK thanks alot mate SmileWavy I'm looking for more fuchs you know ;) |

your 5.5's supposedly were only offered in '68, check your date stamps, but don't be worried if you don't find any. this was not consistent in the early days. Anders; thanks for more good information. as a note, the '72-'73 (approximately) version of the "flat" 6 is; 911.361.020.00 and takes the 3-prong cap, while the .10 wheel takes the ring-type. best jerry |
I have just picked up a set of deep 6s and they are the later ones you were talking about Jerry, ie. Deep 6 style but without the raised lip around the valve.
I also had a guy contact me today who wants 12 4.5x15 for his ralley cars, wow.. who's got 12 4.5 fuchs? Take it easy guys Alan |

You have very nice collection of old Fuchs wheels, Alan. I love them too. I have never had 5.5X15 Fuchs, but I still have one pair of 4.5s and 6s for my ´51 Beetle. Couple of years ago I had 7 911R 7x15 rims. Then I sold a pair for my friend here, one full set to England and the last one to California somewhere. I still miss them sometimes. They were great under my 914 with 205/50 tires. The only problem with them was the transmission rations. They were too close with six. Thats why I chanced them to 16 inch wheels. They work better, but dont look as good :)
