Pics of old fan and housing

I swapped out my fan and housing today that I bought from our host due to corrosion, cracking and rubbing which is visible in the pics, during the swap I cleaned some corrosion off the big red lead to the Alt, if anybody ever needs to change out the alt or to power coat there fan it is a fun easy job, I spent about 2.5 hrs on it.

Take care,

Jack

The tip of the blade in the bottom picture is similar to one of the things that I had on about 6 blades of my fan. I also had the same sort of thing with long cracks at 4 of the 5 struts that hold the alternator centered in the housing at the alternator end. It's ugly. I still have my old parts. The way Mg corrodes is pretty bizarre to someone who is used to corrosion going from the outside in instead of the other way around.

Ya, its called intergranular corrosion (sp) I learned about it hanging around airplanes, it looks weard, inside the blisters is a black pastey substance. The corrosion in the housing caused the alt to twist out of position. Each support in the housing was cracked. I wonder how much strength was left ? I guess its the O2 in the mag that causes it to act like that.

Wow Jack, looks like a good move changing out those parts!! Could you hear the fan rubbing on the housing? The new fan looks so shiny...is it clear-coated or something? Did the new housing have that same shiny finish before you had it powdercoated?

The original parts were not coated. When you buy new parts they do come coated. My fan, a genuine Porsche part from Pelican, came with a clear coat over the otherwise lackluster finish of the raw Mg, and the housing came with a matte black coating like you see in the pic above.

If we cold find out what PAG is using to coat the new Mg wheels on the C-GT, we'd be home free on this stuff.

The properties of MG never cease to amaze me.....

Hi Jack,

I have the same problem and plan on changing the fan housing soon. Even though the new housing is coated black, is it thick and strong enough or would you recommend power coating it.

BTW, the new fan and housing looks really great!

Cheers

The coating on the fan and housing both seem pretty thick. I think they should do the trick.

My gut feeling is that no coating would protect magnesium from internal corrosion, I was told that magnesium does that due to its high oxygen content, I left the new parts as they came for 2 reasons, they should last at least 17 years and the clear coat on the fan protects its looks and I liked the contrast against the black housing.
