Cold Hesitation

I have done a search but need more help.

Car runs like a top and idles perfect when warm or hot. But when it is run COLD (especially now that temps are in 40 at times), it will hesitate for the first few minutes. If I let stand for 5 minutes before I start off, car seems fine. But, if I jump in turn her over and start right out; it will hesitate for the first few minutes until I get a mile or two under my belt. I may be running rich because when the hesitation is happening, I think I smell fuel.

I am thinking it is the AFM (from what I read) but I am unsure how to check. If so, can it be fixed or does it need replacement.

Thanks
Chris

Interested in replies, my '79 930 does the same thing. Thought injectors might be clogged, nope. Checked fuel pressure, nope. Plugs, wires are older but look fine.
Thanks!

Chris,
I don't know if this has the same effect on your Carrera as it did on my SC... but when I purchased my SC it was extremely cold natured and after many months of troubleshooting I found that the previous owner had plugged the Auxiliary Air Regulator. Once I removed this plug, my car started on the first crank without dying and ran much smoother while cold. If the Carrera's don't have this AAR please excuse this response.

rkh3,
This very well may be your problem (though more likely an AAR that is not functioning properly than a plugged one).

our engines take a very long time to warm up with all systems ok.

A 2-3min freezing ambiant idle then a first or second gear for a 1/4mi should be a routine imo... carbs are more fun.
