This is a transmission problem, never never cheep to fix. I cannot explain why it isn't cheep, it just isn't.

The syncro and its corresponding "snap" tab are responsible. They are worn out. THe "snap" tab isn't snaping so to speak, consequently the thing falls out of gear, the syncro is worn out so its also hard to get into gear. The two rings can be replaced for an unreasonable fee by most any Porsche garage.

It's usual 930 disease. Mine was worn out too...you have to open up the tranny and change synchro and maybe the muff.

First check the shift coupler (in tunnel, under cover behind seat); if you're lucky it could be a out of adjustment or have worn bushings - an easy DIY repair for less than $100. If it is a case of a worn 3rd gear slider and synchro ring (parts that match speed for smooth shifting and snap together to hold the transmission in 3rd gear) then the retail cost of parts and supplies alone will be $320 to $450 (915 parts are very dear) to fix just the third gear problem. If the gear has been "grinding" then it will be the higher price for the parts as you will need to replace the synchro hub (AKA dogteeth). Many people have at least all the other synchro rings replaced while the tranmission is open and often also the 1st and 2nd gear slider and synchro hubs and brake bands. Including R and R of the engine and transmission I would estimate your cost to be a minimum of $2500 ($1000 if you DIY and you have or can borrow or can make the needed tools).

This is a good DIY project. The total cost will be about $300 if you just fix the 3rd gear slider and syncro to as much as $900 if you fix all the sliders and syncros. If you choose to have a shop do it you can count on $3500 to $5500 for this job. NO special tools are needed for this job. Just a brass hammer. You get the gears apart by tapping, thats tapping them apart, tap tap tap, with the brass hammer. Gentle taps, thats, just tap, tap tap. NO other secrets. All other info is readily available on web. The only thing to whatch out for is to keep track of the thickness of the gaskets you remove from the transmission when you take it apart. This is the ONLY place you can get into real trouble in, and even then you can get out of it by going to a properly equipped Porsche mechanic and begging for mercy.

If you can do an engine you can do a tranny, with your eyes closed, as long as you keep track of those gaskets.

The slider is the "SNAP" ring that holds the thing in gear. It wears, much like the syncro, and once it does it no longer proviides the "snap" required to hold the car in gear.

Guys, you do remember that this is a 930, and that those cars have transmission that is quite different from 915 that so many Pelicanites dissasembled, right?

It's probably as easy to change as one on 915 but I guess dissassembly instructions differ a bit?

Not much help but I'm in the same boat - going to rebuild & re-gear my 930 box. So any advice / tricks would be most welcome.

On the tool front - I read somewhere that a special jig is required during assembly to line up the different shafts? And I think there are "special" tricks to putting the gears/synchros back onto the shaft?

thanks...

There was a guy who posted a complete set of how to do it photos on line, for the 915, , but I can't find the ref to it. Can anyone help? I would compare the info to the 930 factory info and make a judgement as to what "real" diff there might be and go from there.

search for a post by rececale about his 1st gear problem. plenty of pictures. he was missing a lot of teeth on his 1st syncro hub. (there's no snap tab in there). the teeth of the syncro hub are worn out, as well as the shift sleeve. they can no longer hang onto each other. you will find other wear issues when it's opened up if you know what to look for, so a complete go thru is the best way, rather than tear it all down to just fix one problem. i would pre-quote the complete job at $2500. more time for turbos than a regular 911.
