CIS causing trouble - low idle speed
 

Well, I'm seeking the advice of CIS experts out there. YES, i DID do a search and didn't find anything difinitive...I wanted to see if there were any tweaks to the adjustment of my CIS that can help it idle properly without a trip to the doctor...

Car has started up and run just fine since i bought it in july. Usually would have a slightly low idle when cold (~700rpm), then after warm would be normal (850-950rpm). NOW, the past few days, the overall idle level has dropped so that when cold is barely idles (400-500rpm) and I have to give it a little gas to keep it running, and then when warm the idle is STILL a bit low ar around 700rpm.

would adjusting the idle level screw help? i couldn't find out whether these could be signs of a too lean or too rich setting as well, so i haven't fooled with the mixture either.

also what might cause this change.....could there be leaking? .....ideas? :rolleyes:

Turning your idle speed screw should raise the speed, of course. The question is, why the change? Has the ambient temp changed there the last few days? (in LA?) I would check the usuals that you would have found in your search, like the WUR, O2 sensor and AAR, your mixture, and tuneup items-cap, rotor, wires and plugs.

yeah...no major change in weather here...(it is LA) i'm thinking that if it keeps the low idle today and tomorrow i will just tweak the screw if necessary until monday morning when i can bring it to the doctor. Car is a daily driver and don't have weeks and weeks to diagnose a CIS problem meself (i'm still learning the system and it's weaknesses) I'm guessing that one of the hoses has come a bit loose, or a seal is giving out somewhere in the system cause the mixture has always been good and i have never had any surging or hunting idle.

thought i would post the results to my problem. TRE helped me work it out and it turned out to be a combination of three things.

1) Missing seal in oil cap
2) Lean mixture
3) vaccum leak from bad injector seals

After removing and cleaning the injectors out, new seals were installed, the car now runs much more smooth and has a stable idle so far.
