Early morning speed run

Took my car out for my Sunday drive (early morning speed run) it runs excellent, but is a little twitchy at speed, say +-95mph, is that common for early 911, 1966. I think when it was aligned we put .5 degree of tow in to try to help the situation. any comments?

Matt

What do you mean, twitchy?

Is this a completely stock '66?

Turbo tie rods?

No spoilers of any kind?

Do you mean half a degree of Front toe-in?

short wheel base cars are known for this, as you are running wider tires then stock it shouldn't be as bad as if you were running the stock 165X15's but it's inherent in the design of these cars also I don't believe the 66's came with sway bars, if I remember correctly they only came stock on the S cars but not on the others, I'm in the process of finishing up restoring my 67S and I'm switching out the koni's for billstein's , the bilstien shocks don't work in the Koni struts so I bought some Boge struts, Bilstien makes inserts so they will fit right in, the other thing I'm going to change out is the brake master cylinder all the pre 68 cars came with a single master and I can't stand the way it's braking now so I'm going to change it to a double.

I get a bit of a "float' at 90+ also. I don't have a tail or front spoiler, yet. although I'm getting Souk's C-2 motorized tail to hopefully help the prob on a street car. 90+ and cross winds are a pia.

Yes, completely stock 1966 911, no spoilers, no turbo tie rods, yes .5 degree front tow in. and actually running 195/60 series tires By twitchy I mean it seems very light, like not enough weight or down force to keep the front tires planted firmly on the pavement, I guess you could call it float. Not sure, but I think it got better as speed increased like +100mph, but was only there briefly.

in the 67S they actually added lead weights in the front bumper for this very reason, about sixty pounds, when you remove a front bumper from a 67S you have to be careful.

The car does have a factory front sway bar, I belive its all of 13mm, I think I have a 16mm, but not sure that would help. I also have the early master cylinder, but thought the only difference was the safety aspect, not the feel. Regardless, I will be changing to double soon. I am also running Bilstiens all around, And love the way the car drives and handles. Had a 912 with Konis and the ride was rather stiff/harsh, but it did perform well.

I remember reading about the added weight in the bumpers. Was that only the S cars? I suppose I can add a little weight up front, but that kind of goes against the idea of lighter is better.....Uh maybe not in my circumstance?

the 67S had an extra thirty horse power so I'm sure that's why they did it, in the later cars 72 and 73 they added a front spoiler for extra down force

Stock ride height? Lower the front 3/4" at the bumper and see what it does. That is after you check out all your tie rods, bearing and bushings.

You want to lower the front and add weight at the same time for $3 ? Go buy a bag of sand.

The car is lowered, but I am going to try the bag-o-sand. Have to wait until it stops raining for a test run.
I just re-read an article regarding the factory added weight in the front bumpers, said the weight was added to the outermost corners of the bumper, some 25lbs each. anybody have these weights still installed, or were they even removeable.
